MARY CRUM MIMS

James Island — Mary Crum Mims, 97, passed away with family by her side on July 23, 2026. Born in Rowesville, SC on July 5, 1929, she was the daughter of Benjamin Cleveland Crum and Cornelia Coleman Crum. She was a graduate of Columbia College and was married to Russell W. Mims, Sr. from 1950 until his death in 2021. Mary was a school teacher for 38 years, many of those years teaching Math at Fort Johnson High School.
She was an avid Bridge player all of her adult life, having learned to play in her college dormitory. Mary was a loving mother of three, grandmother of seven, and great-grandmother of fifteen. She had a strong Christian faith and played the piano at both New Hope Methodist Church in Rowesville during high school and at Bethel United Methodist Church in Charleston, which she joined in 1959 and attended until a week before her death.
Mary was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Janice Mims Flynn, in 2012, as well as her brothers Wylie and Benjamin Crum and sisters Cornelia Spell and Margie Dean.
Survivors include a daughter Diane Mims Saylors (Gregory), a son Russell W. Mims, Jr. (Joan), grandchildren Gene B. Saylors (Julia), Courtney S. Noblet ( Nicholas), Bradley J. Saylors (Katie), Amanda M. Mims, Byron G. Mims ( Mary Beth), David L. Flynn, Jr. , and Travis M. Flynn. Mary’s great-grandchildren left to treasure her memory are Finley Saylors, Jameson Saylors, Preston Saylors, Ella Grace Noblet, Caroline Noblet, Sarah Margaret Noblet, Savannah Flynn, Aubrey Flynn, Lawrence Flynn, Jackson Flynn, Grayson Mims, Gavin Mims, Josephine Saylors, Everett Saylors, and Calvin Saylors.
A graveside service will be held at a later date at New Hope Methodist Cemetery in Rowesville. Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church Chancel Guild or Colonel Lewis Sunday School Class, 57 Pitt Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
