Matthew Christopher Martin, age 58, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2025, at his home in Charleston. Born on October 27, 1966, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Matthew was the beloved son of Patrick and Frances (Faeth) Martin.

Matthew was known for his humor and deep generosity, and he loved sharing his life with family and friends. An avid fisherman, his Charleston friends affectionately called him “Kingfisher.” He was also a gifted guitarist whose music brought joy and connection to those around him.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Alyce Kathryn Gevers, and her children and their partners: Tanja and Wes, Christopher and Franzi, Johanna and Apo, Noah, Liliane, and Ryan; as well as her grandchildren Leon Bryn, Maja, and Nina—all of whom he cherished deeply. Matthew also leaves behind his parents; his brother Shaun (Carlos) of Washington, DC; his sister Tracy (Rick) Papurello of Acme, Pennsylvania; and nieces Emily and Sophie Papurello. He will be missed by beloved aunts, an uncle, many cousins, and friends whose lives he touched.

A private memorial will be held by his friends and family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity in Matthew’s honor or to contribute to the “Matthew Martin aka Kingfisher” fund at gofundme.com.
