Wilbert Joseph O’Connell

Hanahan – Wilbert Joseph O’Connell, 88, of Hanahan, died Sunday July 12, 2026, at home. He was born June 7,1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his wife, June O’Connell of 66 years. Survivors include a daughter Marianne Fiutem (Jeffrey Harbit) of Wadmalaw Island and two sons Partick O’Connell of North Charleston and Wilbert O’Connell of Austin, Texas; his grandchildren Isabella Fiutem, Nicolaus Fiutem, Tristan Fiutem, Shaunice Bryson and Angel, Jacob and Vidal O’Connell; and 6 great-grandchildren.

He proudly served 3 years in the Marine Corps, where he was stationed in Japan, Greece and Lebanon. He worked for 28 years for 3M Corporation in Bristol, Pennsylvania. After retiring from 3M , he and his wife June moved to Johns Island, South Carolina where they both were devoted grandparents to their grandchildren. Bill worked for 8 years at the James Island County Park in Charleston, South Carolina. Bill loved outdoor activities and the Philadelphia Eagles football team. He helped coach the archery team at Christ Our King-Stella Maris school in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, where Nicolaus and Tristan competed.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church on Daniel Island, South Carolina at 11:00 am, Wednesday, July 22, 2026. Burial will follow the ceremony at Holy Cross Cemetery on James Island, South Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, 225 Seven Farms Drive, Suite 100, Daniel Island, SC 29492.
