Dr. Courtney Earl Apperson, Jr., 79, of Lexington, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026. Born on January 6, 1947, in Lynchburg, Virginia, he lived a life marked by intellectual achievement, professional dedication, and a deep love for family and the simple joys of life.

Dr. Apperson's academic journey was one of distinction and excellence. A proud graduate of the Virginia Military Institute in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Physics, he was recognized as a distinguished graduate and honored with the prestigious Stonewall Jackson Award for Excellence in Physics. He continued his education at the University of Virginia, earning both a Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1971 and later a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering in 1981.

Throughout his career, Dr. Apperson made significant contributions to the nuclear field. His work focused on ensuring critical safety within nuclear facilities—a responsibility he approached with unwavering commitment. He played an instrumental role in shaping industry standards through his contributions to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and served as an elected member on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Military Institute Research Laboratories.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Apperson found joy in many pursuits that reflected his vibrant personality and zest for life. An avid photographer and traveler, he captured countless memories through his lens and transformed them into cherished photo books that celebrated his adventures. He enjoyed gardening and boating, finding peace and fulfillment in nature's beauty. A fitness enthusiast, he could often be found jogging or at the gym. His culinary talents were well-known among family and friends—his apple pie was a particular favorite—and he had an enduring appreciation for good food, especially ice cream, brownies, potato chips, Coke, and hot tea.

Dr. Apperson was also deeply rooted in his faith as a member of Mount Horeb Methodist Church in Lexington. He found solace and inspiration in singing hymns and listening to organ music during worship services.

Family was central to Dr. Apperson's life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Pamela Apperson; his sister, Carolyn Apperson; stepdaughter, Stephanie Lorick (husband Michael) and their children, Sydney and Savannah; stepson, Craig Hansel (wife Linda) and their children, Grant and Alexander; daughter, Joy Keplar and her children, Moss, Larken, and Lyric; daughter, Lori Shelton (husband James) and their children, Jacob and Ian. He was predeceased by his first wife, Betty Ann Bishop Apperson.

Dr. Apperson's kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on those who knew him. His legacy is one of intellectual curiosity, dedication to excellence, love for family, and an appreciation for life's simple pleasures.
