Earl Melvin Pletcher

Earl Melvin Pletcher, 90, of Lexington, South Carolina, passed away on May 26, 2026, at Lexington Medical Center Extended Care. Born on June 15, 1935, in Philo, Ohio, Earl was the son of Ronald and Ina (Harrop) Pletcher, and one of eight children raised on a family farm—a place that shaped his lifelong work ethic, warmth, and love of community.

From an early age, Earl embraced life with energy and enthusiasm. He developed a deep love for sports, eventually playing football at Muskingum College. After marrying Jo Ann (Farmer) Pletcher, in 1960, Earl dedicated himself to teaching and coaching at the high school level, guiding young people not only in athletics but in life.

In 1967, Earl began a long and meaningful career with State Farm Insurance in Cincinnati, Ohio. There, he built enduring friendships that became like family—relationships he cherished throughout his life. Earl and Jo Ann raised their three daughters—Leigh Ann, Elaine, and Erin—in Blanchester, Ohio, where family and community were always at the center of their lives.

Earl and Jo Ann were deeply involved in 4-H, serving as club advisors and inspiring countless young people. Together with their daughters, they raised and showed cattle, hogs, and sheep, creating lasting memories. Many former 4-H members still fondly recall the camping and fishing trips Earl led with unwavering enthusiasm, patience, and joy. His ability to make everyone feel included and important left a lasting mark on generations of youth.

After retiring, Earl continued to pursue his passions. He found joy in operating a small business selling vintage signs at festivals and fairs, where he could do what he loved most—connect with people. He also treasured visits to South Carolina to see his daughters and grandchildren, a place that eventually became home in 2019. There, Earl happily embraced life as a University of South Carolina Gamecock fan, while never losing his loyalty to his Ohio State Buckeyes. Living closer to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him immense happiness in his later years.

Earl will be remembered as someone who truly never met a stranger. His genuine kindness, easy smile, and remarkable ability to connect with people of all ages made him beloved by many. He lived fully, loved deeply, and left a legacy of compassion, laughter, and togetherness.

He is survived by his sisters: Jean Carol Neal, Shirley Spring, Connie Clifton, Janet Cox, and Pam Barrett; his daughters: Leigh Ann Spell (Jamie), Elaine Vastine, and Erin Pletcher; his grandchildren: Peyton Vastine, Kendall Vastine, Hannah Spell, and Kyler Spell (Lexi); and his great-grandchildren: Brynleigh Vastine and Zane Vastine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald and Ina Pletcher; his sister, Ruth Anderson; his brother, Carl Pletcher; and his beloved wife, Jo Ann Pletcher.
