Hortense Viola Brooks

Hortense Viola Brooks of Irmo, SC passed away on March 5, 2026, peacefully at her home under hospice care surrounded by her family. 

Hortense was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many. She was known for her wonderful, kind spirit and loving personality. Her love for her family was evident to all. 

She was predeceased by her parents, Joshua Latouche and Amy Isabell Dixon, her adoptive parents, H.S. “Teacher” Douglas and Zittah Berl Douglas, her husband, Basil Brooks, two brothers, (Archibald Sparks and Denzel Douglas). She is lovingly survived by her three children: Nigel Brooks, Jacqueline Brooks (Lance), and Karen Durham (Warren), her sister, Elaine Harrison (Charlie), her brother, Val Douglas Sr, her granddaughter, Lauren Haley (Eric), great grandchildren, Shayla and Noah Haley, a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, along with her special friends. She was loved and will be dearly missed by all. 

The family of Hortense V. Brooks wishes to express our heartfelt appreciation for the many comforting messages of love and encouragement we have received. Your prayers, cards, flowers, meals and countless other expressions of kindness and concern have been a tremendous source of strength and comfort to us. 

The family would also like to send a special thank you to Prisma Health Hospice Care for taking such good care of our mom during this difficult time.
