Celebrating the Life of James Phillip Nibe June 12, 1941 – July 7, 2026

James Phillip Nibe, a man of exceptional honor, warmth, and boundless generosity, passed away peacefully in Columbia, South Carolina, on July 7, 2026, at the age of 85. Known to all as a wonderful person and a true friend, James lived a life defined by loyalty to his country, excellence in his career, and a fierce devotion to his family.

Born on June 12, 1941, in Des Moines, Iowa, James learned the values of integrity and hard work early in life. As a young man, he proudly answered the call to serve his country, spending his early years in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps from August 1961 to August 1967. He concluded his service with an honorable discharge, carrying the values of discipline and patriotism with him forever. His commitment to fellow veterans continued throughout his life as a dedicated member of the American Legion Post 488 in Monroe, New York, which he joined in 1980 and remained active in until his passing. He was also a respected member of the Memorial Lodge F&AM 648 in East Syracuse, New York, the Friendship Lodge F&AM 53, and the Scottish Rite in Ocala, Florida, finding great fellowship in his Masonic brotherhood. James also nourished his deep faith as a member of the College Road Baptist Church in Ocala, Florida.

Following his military service, James built a stellar, 41-year career in auto finance. He spent 18 years with GMC, 13 years with GE Capital where he achieved the prestigious GE Capital Pinnacle Award for his outstanding excellence and 10 years with Auto Credit. Coworkers and clients alike knew James as a man of absolute integrity who brought a kind smile to every deal.

Beyond his professional success, James was an avid traveler whose GMC Pinnacle Award provided the opportunity for Jim to explore his curiosity of the world taking him across the globe. He explored Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bali, Vietnam, Monte Carlo, France, Italy, Sweden, and Russia. At home, he found immense joy in the simpler pleasures of life, including reading, fishing, earning him the affectionate nickname "Catfish Jim" among family and friends, caring for his pets, and spending invaluable time with his friends and family. James was a man who never met a stranger, and his welcoming spirit made everyone feel valued.

Above all his achievements, James’s greatest joy was his family. He was incredibly proud of his daughter, Melissa, carrying her achievements and happiness close to his heart as one of his life's proudest legacies. His love for his children and grandchildren was absolute and unconditional.

James was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Harlan M. and Berniece Nibe, and his brothers, Robert Nibe and Richard Nibe.

He is survived by his sister, Susan Nibe of Ellenville, New York; his devoted daughter, Melissa Nibe Kinard, and son-in-law, Alan Kinard; his son, Christopher Nibe, and daughter-in-law, Alexis Nibe; and his cherished grandchildren, Maddison Nibe and Chase Nibe.

A funeral service celebrating James's remarkable life will be held on Tuesday,  August 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, located at 8015 Ballantyne Commons Parkway, Charlotte, NC 28277.
