James Edward Sligh Jr

James E. Sligh Jr. (Jimmy), 84, of Newberry, SC, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday August 4, 2026.

Born on July 18, 1942, to parents, Mildred Purdue and James E. Sligh Sr., Jimmy spent his youth attending school at Newberry High school and later continued his education at Newberry College earning his bachelor’s in business management in 1965. Immediately after college, he began his life-long career working for Gulf Oil where he dedicated over 50 years. During this time, he also joined the Saluda National Guard. “Papa” as his family called him, always provided for everyone, and strived to help others. In his spare time, when he was home for the weekends, Jimmy could be found everywhere with his son, James, barbequing, playing with grandkids, or simply spending quality time with family. He was a member of Colony Lutheran Church where he served as vice president of the council, treasurer of the church and youth advisor for many years.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ellen Long Sligh, who he spent nearly 62 wonderful years of marriage with; his son, James Edward Sligh III (Gail) of Newberry, his daughter, Mary Jane Sligh Zwart (J.P) of Newberry, his grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Sligh, KayleighJane Zwart, Keribeth Zwart, and Jase Edward Zwart of Newberry. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Holliday (Ed) of Georgia, his brother, Steve Perdue Sligh (Leslie) of Newberry, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday September 5, 2026, at 11:00 am at the Colony Lutheran Church Cemetery, 48 Colony Church Rd, Newberry, SC 29108, conducted by Pastor Randy Drafts. We appreciate all the love and support from family and friends at this time. We would like to extend a thank you to Julia Long for her generosity and help during our time of need and the love she gave us all.
