Jay Douglas Metts

Jay Douglas Metts, 77, of Columbia, South Carolina, went home to be with our Lord on Friday, August 7, 2026. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.

Jay was born in Columbia, South Carolina, to Jay Dee Metts and Doris Rutherford Metts. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts in accounting and dedicated much of his professional life to serving others through his work in human resources. Jay served as Human Resource Director at Hardaway Concrete for 33 years. After Hardaway closed, he continued his career as Human Resource Director at McEntire Produce, where he served for five years.

Jay’s faith was an important part of his life. He deeply loved his church and church family and faithfully served in many ways throughout the years. He sang in the traditional choir and New Life Band, played handbells, and served on numerous church committees. His church was a place where he found fellowship, purpose, and many cherished friendships.

Music was another great passion throughout Jay’s life. He began playing keyboard at the age of 12 and continued to share his love of music throughout his life, playing in various bands over the years. Most recently, he was a member of Jumpstart, where he played for more than 20 years. Jay treasured the friendships he made through music and especially enjoyed the laughter, adventures, and countless memories he shared with his longtime friends and bandmates.

Jay also loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, camping, hiking, and cookouts with family and friends. He served for several years as an Assistant Scout Leader for Boy Scout Troop 8, where he shared his time, knowledge, and encouragement with the young people he helped guide.

Above all, Jay was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Jennifer Ayres Metts; his sons, Jay Douglas Metts, Jr. (Danielle) and Reid Alexander Metts (Savannah); and his grandchildren, Kinsley, Jordy, and Madison.

He was predeceased by his parents, Jay Dee and Doris Rutherford Metts, and his brother, David Bruce Metts.

Jay leaves behind a life filled with faith, family, friendship, music, laughter, and countless cherished memories. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His generous spirit, love of music, devotion to his family and church, and the joy he brought to those around him will remain in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, located at 1301 Richland Street Columbia, South Carolina, 29201.  A reception will immediately follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Jay’s memory to Ebenezer Lutheran Church Music Program or Ebenezer Lutheran Church Living Stones Legacy Fund.
