John Samuel Metts (Sammy), 78, went home to be with our Lord and savior on August 29, 2026.
Sammy was born on December 30, 1947 in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Frankie Lee Metts, Sr and Lindy Adair Vogt Metts.
Sammy graduated from Orangeburg High School. He studied welding at Orangeburg Calhoun Technical College and ultimately became a master welder, owning his own business.
Sammy’s faith was an important part of his life. He enjoyed reading his Bible and listening to Christian radio.
He is survived by his daughters, Teresa Kimberly Robinson Shackelford, Kristi Metts Antley, and Tammie Metts (Edwin) Smoak; his grandchildren, Megan Knight Whetstone, Victoria Christine Antley, Christian Wade Antley, Grace Angie Antley, Christopher Lee Robinson Jr, Cherokee Shackelford and Landon Matthew (Shayna) Smoak; and his great-grandchildren, Juliet Shackelford, Christopher Lee Robinson III, James Nathaniel Robinson, Jaeden Adrian Whetstone, Micah James Whetstone, McKenna Rose Whetstone, Anakin Wade Legette, Charlee Rae Smoak, and Eliana Elise Robinson (due 11/08/26)
Family and friends are invited to come visit with the family on September 5, 2026 between the hours of 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm at the home of Edwin and Tammie Smoak in Orangeburg.
In lieu of flowers, please write down a fond memory that you shared with Sammy and either mail it or bring it to the visitation.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Latosha Corley, NP with MUSC Internal Medicine/Primary Care and staff in Orangeburg, SC, Dr Joshua Coney with MUSC Health Heart & Vascular and staff in Columbia, SC, and Dr Jeffrey Keenan with Duke Cardiothoracic Surgery and staff in Durham, NC.
