Joyce Pitts Nobles
June 8, 1933 — May 19, 2026
Joyce Pitts Nobles passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026. She was born June 8, 1933, and was the daughter of Fred Werber Pitts and Lois Elizabeth Nichols Pitts of Denmark, South Carolina. She lived a life marked by learning, dedication, faith, and deep love for her family.
Joyce is survived by her children: Elizabeth “Beth” N. Powell of Columbia, Jill N. Mechling of Clinton, and James W. Nobles of Prosperity. She is also survived by six grandchildren and eight great‑grandchildren, all of whom were a source of great joy and pride in her life.
A lifelong learner, Joyce earned her undergraduate degree from Newberry College in 1965 and taught Mathematics at Newberry High School for three years. She then moved her young family to Columbia where she completed her Master’s Degree at the University of South Carolina. She devoted many years to education, retiring from Richland School District Two in 1982 where she was a mathematics teacher at Spring Valley High School. After retiring she tutored children at Epworth Children’s Home and was a book reader and storyteller to elementary school students as two of the many ways she gave back to the community. Never one to stop learning or embrace retirement lightly, Joyce returned to school to earn a degree in Computer Science. She went on to work as a computer programmer with the South Carolina Department of Education helping to modernize the grading of standardized tests using her coding and mathematical skills — long before computer technology became central to everyday life.
Joyce had a deep love for the Edisto River, where she and her family spent many cherished summers making memories that will be treasured for generations. Her faith was a guiding force throughout her life, and she was a devoted member of Shandon United Methodist Church for over 50 years where she was a member of the choir and handbells ensemble. She taught her family how to face adversity with courage. Her advice was simple, honest, and unforgettable: “If you can look up, you can get up,” and “Life ain’t easy.” She believed hard times were not excuses to quit, but opportunities to work harder, stay strong, and keep moving forward. To her students, she was an inspiration. To her church family, a steady presence. To her children and grandchildren, she was the foundation of the family. Joyce was always there.
Joyce Pitts Nobles will be remembered for her intellect, perseverance, faith, and the quiet strength with which she lived her life. Her legacy lives on through her family, her work, and the many lives she touched.
Joyce will be laid to rest beside her mother and father in Silverstreet, SC after a private burial site service of remembrance and celebration of her life.
