Mary Catherine “Cathy” Monts, 68, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 6, 2025. She was born on April 8, 1957, to the late Jack and Mildred Herndon.

A proud and dedicated American, Cathy served her country faithfully for 14 years in the U.S. Navy, achieving the rank of E6. Her commitment to duty and service defined a significant chapter of her life.

Outside of her military career, Cathy was known for her vibrant spirit and unwavering enthusiasm. Cathy was a die-hard Carolina Gamecock fan, finding great joy in supporting the teams, especially the Women's Basketball program, where she was a committed member of the G-hive. She was also an active and beloved member of the Girl Scout community, dedicating 15 years of her life as a Girl Scout leader and mentor. Cathy's adventurous nature meant she was always "down for an adventure or last-minute trip," embracing spontaneity and creating unforgettable memories with her loved ones.

Cathy will be deeply missed by all who knew her, especially for her courage, her lively personality, and her profound love for family and friends.

Mary is survived by her loving daughters, Jacqueline Monts and her spouse, Robert Campbell, and Susan Powell and her spouse, James Powell. She was the cherished grandmother to Jeremiah “JJ” Campbell. She also leaves behind her devoted siblings, Patricia Webb and Thomas Herndon, and many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Her lifelong friends that she loved as family, Heather Keys and Annalisa Meeks, also mourn her passing.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Jack and Mildred Herndon.
