Michael Cooper
Jul 9, 1960 — Oct 11, 2026
Michael Cooper, a beloved husband and devoted father, passed away peacefully at his home on October 11, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones after a brave battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born on July 9, 1960, in Karamursel, Turkey, Michael was the son of the late James and Clara Cooper. He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings Tommy, Terry, and Kim.
Michael's early years were marked by a strong sense of duty and love for his country, leading him to serve in the United States Air Force from 1979 to 1987, followed by twelve years in the Air National Guard. His dedication and exemplary service saw him rise to the esteemed rank of Master Sergeant. He found immense pride and fulfillment in his work at McEntire Joint National Guard Base, where he remained until his well-deserved retirement in 2025.
In 2004, Michael married the love of his life, Jill Brillinger, in a union that was marked by love, laughter, and unwavering support. Together, they raised Jill's daughter, Katie, to whom Michael showed his devotion by presenting her with a ring during their wedding ceremony. Michael embraced his role as a father to Crystal, Brooke, and Katie, nurturing them with kindness and guiding them with wisdom.
Education was a significant part of Michael's life. He graduated from Sumter High School in 1979 and furthered his studies at the University of Maryland. His love for learning was only rivaled by his passion for sports, particularly his unwavering support for the South Carolina Gamecocks. Whether it was baseball or any other sport, Michael could always be found cheering on his favorite team, his enthusiasm unyielding whether the games were on TV or radio.
Michael's warm and generous nature was evident to all who knew him. Michael was always ready to lend a hand to family members and friends with anything they needed. Known for his sly smile and big heart, he had an innate ability to make everyone feel special. His love for animals, especially the family's Golden Retrievers, was profound. He shared a particularly special bond with Millie, his loyal companion, and the two were inseparable.
Michael leaves behind his beloved wife of 21 years, Jill; his daughters Crystal and Brooke Cooper, and Katie Baxter (Taylor); two grandchildren, Walker and Gracelynn Cooper; his siblings, Bobby, Donald, and Paula Cooper and Jennifer Nobles. He is also survived by his Mother-in-Law, Barbara Brillinger, with whom Michael shared a special relationship. His family and friends will dearly miss his presence, but his spirit and the love he shared will forever remain in their hearts.
A service to celebrate Michael's life will be held on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, located at 4170 Percival Rd., Columbia, SC 29229.
