Terry Wayne Lipscomb

Terry Wayne Lipscomb, 81, of Columbia,SC died at his home on May 3,2026. 

A native of Greenville, Mr. Lipscomb grew up in Spartanburg and graduated from Wofford College.

He was the son of the late Doris Lipscomb Spann and Ret. USAF Lt. Col. George William Strahlem, but was adopted and raised by his grandparents Walter P. Lipscomb and Myrtle Nelson Lipscomb.

He is survived by two siblings, Candi Davis of Natchez, MS. and Lindsey Davis of Greenville, S.C., and a close cousin, Libby Lipscomb Boyer of Mathews, Va.

Terry spent his entire career with the South Carolina Dept. of Archives and History and was also associated with the South Caroliniana Library. Lipscomb was a prominent historian and editor. He specialized in the colonial and Revolutionary War eras of South Carolina, producing foundational research materials used by scholars and genealogists.

A memorial will be held at Wofford College on Nov. 1 when the college remembers alumni with the Tolling of the Bell. A private burial will take place in Greenville.
