In Loving Memory of Marvin Lloyd Smith
November 2, 1949 – August 22, 2026
Marvin Lloyd Smith, of Oakdale, Minnesota, passed away on August 22, 2026. He was born on November 2, 1949, in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Marvin was a devoted and loving man who will be remembered for his big personality, his strong spirit, and the love he shared with his family and those around him. He was especially fond of cars, children, puppies, clothes, softball, and—of course—money! These simple pleasures brought him great joy and were a part of what made Marvin uniquely Marvin.
Marvin’s passion for athletics began at a young age. As a youth, he took up speed skating and became a member of the Powderhorn Skating Team. He also had a deep love of softball, enjoying the sport, the competition, and the camaraderie it brought. His early involvement in speed skating and his love of softball helped establish a lifelong love of competition, fitness, and athletic achievement.
That passion continued throughout his life as Marvin became an avid bodybuilder, taking great pride in his strength, discipline, and physical fitness. His dedication earned him impressive honors. In 1999, Marvin won 1st Place in the Mr. Minnesota Bantamweight Division. He continued competing and, in 2001, won 1st Place in the Mr. Minnesota Masters Over 50 Division. These achievements reflected not only his physical strength, but also his determination, discipline, and commitment to pursuing what he loved.
Marvin dedicated nearly 40 years of his life to working at 3M, where he built a long and proud career. Retirement, however, was not the end of Marvin’s desire to learn and challenge himself. After retiring from 3M, he learned to play the piano, embracing a new passion and proving that it was never too late to learn something new.
Above all, Marvin cherished his family and was blessed to share his life with the love of his life, Gwen Bryant-Kemp. He leaves behind his daughters, Stefanie Frost, Christine Davis; stepdaughter Dell; grandchildren Jeron Morgan, Jeréa Morgan, Divar Kemp, DJ Brooks, Da’Vaia Davis, and Randy Newell; and great-grandchildren Da’Mari Davis and Raéghna Foggey. He is also survived by a host of beloved nieces and a nephew.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents Glenn Smith and Azalia Smith; siblings Glenn Smith, Inez Smith, Marcella Johnson, Charlotte Anderson, Byron Smith, Cecil Smith, Gladys Smith, and Linda Smith; nieces Gwen Smith and Camille Anderson; nephew Glen Allen Smith; great-niece Valencia Sheppard-Smith; and great-nephew Courtney Smith.
Though Marvin has left this world, the memories he created and the love he gave will remain with his family and all who knew him. His laughter, his personality, his love of cars, skating, softball, bodybuilding, music, clothes, and the finer things in life will never be forgotten.
Marvin lived life in his own way—with strength, character, determination, humor, and a personality that could never be overlooked. From the young speed skater on the Powderhorn Skating Team, to the softball enthusiast, to the accomplished Minnesota bodybuilder, to the retiree who decided to learn piano, Marvin continued to challenge himself and embrace life on his own terms.
His legacy lives on through the family he loved, the accomplishments he was proud of, and the many people whose lives he touched.
Rest peacefully, Marvin. You will be deeply loved, greatly missed, and forever remembered.
