In Loving Memory of Mr. David "Clem" Lynn Friesenborg

It is with both sorrow and fondly amused recollections that we announce the passing of David “Clem” Lynn Friesenborg. Born February 1, 1944, in Buffalo Center, Iowa, Dave passed away February 16, 2026, in Winter Haven, Florida. Known to many as “Clem” and lovingly as “Grandpa Tiny,” he has now embarked on what we imagine is a fishing trip of mythical proportions—where the fish are always biting and the hunting grounds stretch forever.

Though his beloved wife, Sharon Friesenborg, preceded him in death, we know they are already reunited, sharing stories of grand catches and laughing together just as they always did. Dave was also preceded in death by his sisters Gladys Friesenborg, Ruth Leibrand, Marjorie Mutschler and his  grandson Jaxon and great-grandson Daxsyn. 

He is survived by his sisters, Patsy Sorenson, Arliss Rich, Sharon Nerdig and Beverly Jutting; his sons, Lynn DeVries (Ann) and Danny DeVries (Melanie); and his daughters, Dawn Friesenborg and Courtney Friesenborg. He also lovingly welcomed his stepchildren Ginger Williams (Beau), Cheryl Hardman (Bron), and Randy Snider (Bo) into his heart and family. Dave took great pride in his growing family, which includes 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren—creating a family tree that not even the most enthusiastic outdoorsman could outgrow.

Dave graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1962, later attending Waldorf College and Bemidji State University. While in college, at 6 foot 11 inches tall, he was undoubtedly born to play basketball.  He was drafted by the Indiana Pacers, however a knee injury derailed his NBA dream in one of his very first practices with the team. He made lifelong memories on the court, carrying that same competitive spirit into the many passions that followed.

A dedicated outdoorsman, Dave found his greatest joy on the water and in the woods. Known to friends and family as “Clem,” he loved bass fishing and spent countless hours casting his line from the dock, the beach, or wherever the next good fishing spot might be. He proudly competed in bass tournaments, placing 3rd in the 1982 Florida Invitational Bass Tournament and fishing in the 1983 Bassmaster Classic World Championship. Many of his favorite memories were made deer hunting in Kentucky with his best friend "Bubba"—stories that grew bigger with each retelling, just like the fish and the bucks.

Dave’s career reflected his natural mechanical talent and entrepreneurial spirit. Over many years he worked as an Outboard Motor Mechanic at Marine Supply in Winter Haven. He also contributed to the research and development of snowmobiles and personal watercraft for companies such as Artic Cat, Polaris, WetJet, and MasterCraft. In his younger years he owned S & D Racing, specializing in high-performance snowmobile parts and service, and later MSE Research and Design where he focused on personal watercraft, electric golf carts and hunting buggies. Whether working on engines or designing new ideas, Dave loved figuring out how things worked—and making them run better.

Per Dave’s wishes, a small family gathering will be held to honor his memory. Knowing him, he wouldn’t want a long goodbye. Instead, he would hope we share a laugh, tell a good story, and maybe even wet a line in his honor.

Dave’s kindness and easygoing nature left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He leaves behind a legacy filled with warmth, laughter, and stories that will be told for generations.

Here’s to Clem—whose spirit will forever drift across calm waters and quiet woods. May his next adventure bring the biggest fish, the largest deer, the best stories, and the finest company.
