Maria Anna Mercer
Mar 11, 1944 — Oct 12, 2026
Maria Anna (aka Marianne) Mercer (1944–2026)
Marianne Mercer, 82, of Sun City Center, Florida, passed away on October 12, 2026.
Born in Bamberg, Germany, in 1944, Marianne was raised by her mother, Kunigunda Zahn, alongside her two siblings after her father, Paul, died when she was one year old. She valued her European roots and loved traveling, especially to the Swiss mountains. Later, she came to treasure days at the Florida beaches.
Marianne met Lee Mercer, a U.S. Army helicopter pilot, in Bamberg in 1962. They married in October 1963 and, during Lee’s military service, moved around the United States and Germany. Northern Germany and Heidelberg—where Marianne lived for the longest time in Germany—were among their favorite places.
Marianne enjoyed her work in the textile industry, particularly attending exhibits and trade shows featuring fine fabrics, especially silks. She valued the opportunity to meet people from around the world. She and Lee also traveled widely, including on river cruises throughout Europe.
Marianne and her daughter, Michaela, shared a love of travel and vacations. They especially enjoyed time on Anna Maria Island and trips to Germany, where they visited Neuschwanstein and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Maintaining friendships mattered deeply to Marianne; even after three decades in the United States, she remained close to her longtime German friends.
She also had a joyful sense of humor. One of Michaela’s fondest memories is a car ride with Marianne and her mother, Kunigunda, as the two made increasingly ridiculous rhymes. Marianne laughed so hard she could hardly breathe.
Marianne is survived by her husband, Lee; her daughter, Michaela; her son-in-law; and her grandchild.
Those who knew Marianne will remember her care and the deep love she had for her family—even when it was not always easy for her to show.
