Albert "Al" Wilhelm

Albert “Al” Wilhelm, 92, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, passed away on September 13, 2026.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1934, Al lived a full and remarkable life defined by curiosity, creativity, service, and devotion to his family. He graduated from Northern Illinois University and Chicago Teachers College, establishing the foundation for a lifelong commitment to education and learning.

Al proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. While in the Air Force, he played the trombone—a passion that remained an important part of his life for many years. He continued sharing his love of music for decades as a member of the Medinah Shriner Brass Band.

A devoted Mason and Shriner, Al was recently honored for 50 years of membership and service. His longstanding involvement reflected his commitment to fellowship, community, and helping others.

Following his military service, Al dedicated his career to helping young people as a teacher and guidance counselor at Wheaton Central High School. Through his encouragement, compassion, and guidance, he positively influenced generations of students.

Al was a voracious reader whose interests were as varied as they were enduring. He had a lifelong passion for cars, boats, and aviation and enjoyed the freedom of flying as a pilot. A remarkably talented artist, Al expressed his creativity through oil paintings and drawings. His family and friends will especially remember his beloved cartoon character, AwkBird, which reflected his imagination and distinctive sense of humor.

Above all, Al cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Gail Wilhelm; his son Keith Wilhelm (Katie), and their children, Kirsten, Keaton and Kaden; his son Kevin Wilhelm (Madeyline Brown); his stepsons Jon Espelage (Jamie), and Joe Espelage (Diana), and grandchildren, Josh, Nick and Eliot Espelage; his sisters, Rosemary Kowalski and Sandy Rebechini.

Al was preceded in death by his brother, Steve Ribich (Jackie).

Al will be remembered for his inquisitive mind, artistic spirit, love of music, commitment to education, service to others, and unwavering devotion to his family. His many talents, stories, and the countless ways he enriched the lives of those around him will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children. 

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
