Gerald "Jerry" Ely

Jerry Ely, a longtime resident of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, passed away from a long and well-fought battle with Parkinson’s surrounded by the love of a family who will miss him beyond measure.

Jerry lived a full and remarkable life. A proud United States Marine, a brilliant information technology professional, an avid golfer and athlete, and a true socialite, he was a man with an unmistakable presence. He built an accomplished career in the Northern Virginia/Metro DC area as an information technology expert and consultant, earning the respect of those who knew his intelligence, expertise, and extraordinary mind.

But Jerry was so much more than his career.

He loved people. He loved conversation, friendship, laughter, a great glass of Merlot, golf, and his family most of all. He had a sharp wit, along with a deep, compassionate, and generous heart. He possessed that rare ability to make people smile, laugh, and feel welcomed and remembered. Jerry enjoyed life and the people who filled it, and everyone who knew Jerry experienced more joy and laughter in his presence. Jerry never met a stranger, and no stranger ever felt like one around him.

Hilton Head Island became a place he truly loved and called home. He especially treasured his decades-long friendships with those who moved down to Hilton Head and carried their deep friendship circle in retirement. He relished in the lifestyle that came with living on the island surrounded by his closest friends.

Above everything else, Jerry loved his family.

Jerry was born in Bloomington, IL, and received his bachelor’s degree in computer science from American University in Washington, D.C. He spent decades heading up computer and information technology centers in the Department of Defense and went on to be a valued consultant in the private sector with organizations like Lockheed Martin. He is survived by his beloved children, Dawn Ely and Derek Ely (Nadia), and his sister, Doris (Ken). Preceding him in death were his mother Marie, his father Earl, his sister Shirley, and brother William.

His intelligence, personality, humor, and larger-than-life spirit will be profoundly missed.

Celebration of Life for Gerald ("Jerry") Ely will be held on Friday, August 28th, 2026 from 1pm to 3pm at the Tidepointe Community Clubhouse, 700 TidePointe Way, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928. Your presence or florist deliveries are welcomed.
