James Baird McMullan
September 20, 1937 — June 6, 2026
Jim passed away on Saturday, June 6th, 2026, after a long illness. He was born on September 20th, 1937, to Margaret Finnegan and James McMullan in New York City. Jim was a graduate of Dubois High School. He then served for two years in the Army, stationed at Fort Bragg. He later attended Fordham University and earned a degree in Economics.
Jim began his banking career in 1968 in the Banker’s Trust Government Bond Division. He joined Merrill Lynch in 1972, working in both their New York and San Francisco offices. In 1979, Jim became a partner at William E. Pollack & Co., a primary bond dealer in New York City.
He and Jo retired in 1998 and moved to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Jim was never one to sit back and rest on his laurels. He started volunteering at Hospice Care of the Low Country, teaching English at St. Francis and, later, at the Literacy Center. He also enjoyed tutoring young students after school at Neighbourhood Outreach Connection.
Jim was always the consummate teacher. During his working career, he mentored several young people, always generous in sharing his business knowledge. The best advice he would pass on: “Your most valuable asset is your good name.” His integrity was beyond question. Jim was known for his quick wit, kindness, generosity, and extensive sports knowledge.
He was predeceased by his two sisters, Margaret and Elizabeth. Jim leaves behind his niece, Patricia, his nephews, Daniel, Stephen, Larry, and Jim Sullivan, two children, Jim and Jennifer, and his wife, Jo, of 59 years. Jim was a loyal friend, a loving father, and a devoted best friend to Jo.
We wish to express our gratitude to the Preston Health Center, Gentiva Hospice, and the devoted nurses for the care they provided over the last few months. Their compassion and hard work are to be commended. Donations in Jim’s name to Hospice Care of the Low Country, Neighborhood Outreach Connection, or your favorite charity are welcome.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, June 20th, 2026, at 11 am at All Saints Episcopal Church, located at 3001 Meeting Street on Hilton Head Island.
