Marlene "Mari" Colcolough

It is with deep sadness and gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Marlene "Mari" Colcolough, who passed away on July 3, 2026, at the age of 89.

Marlene “Mari” Colcolough was born on August 5, 1936, in Winnsboro, South Carolina. From an early age, she showed a strong interest in music, which led her to study at Columbia College. Her love of learning and adventure would shape much of her early adult life.

Before her marriage, Mari worked as a flight attendant for Eastern Air Lines, a role that reflected both her poise and her adventurous spirit. During this time, she experienced a particularly memorable moment when she was selected by a flight superintendent to serve as a hostess aboard a Super Constellation aircraft carrying members of the White House staff and Secret Service during a portion of President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s trip. While on board, she even shared coffee with members of the presidential party — a lighthearted and cherished story she delighted in telling throughout her life.

After marrying, Mari devoted much of her life to music education. She taught piano at the Cadek Conservatory of Music at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where she nurtured the talents of countless students. She also taught many neighborhood children in her home, creating a welcoming environment filled with music and learning. An active member of the Music Teachers Association, Mari served as organist at St. Jude’s Catholic Church and performed at various venues throughout the Chattanooga area.

In 1958, Mari married John “Jack” Colcolough Jr., and together they built a warm and active family life centered around their children. In later years, the couple retired to Hilton Head Island, where they remained devoted to one another until the end of their lives. Their bond was especially evident in their final days, as Mari passed away just three days after Jack was laid to rest.

Mari is preceded in death by her beloved husband, John “Jack” Colcolough Jr. She is survived by her children, many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her love of music, her generous spirit, and the many cherished memories she created throughout her life.
