Stephanie Louise McLellan

Stephanie Louise McLellan believed that ordinary moments were worth remembering and that people should never wonder whether they were loved. She spent her life quietly proving both to be true. Stephanie passed away peacefully on August 4, 2026, at the age of 82.

Born on March 5, 1944, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Stephanie was the only child of Virginia and Raymond Wall. She lived in Mansfield, Ohio until age 2 before moving to Mountain View, New Jersey, and later to Sparta, where she attended Sparta High School. It was there, while sneaking into a drive-in movie hidden in the trunk of a car, she met the love her life, Bruce McLellan.

After high school, Stephanie attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and traveled throughout Europe. She moved with her parents to Spring Lake, New Jersey, while Bruce served in the Army in Washington, D.C. They married May 1,1971, made their first home in Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia, welcomed their only child, Dana in 1974, and settled in the Mount Vernon area, in 1979, where they spent the next 25 years.

Stephanie spent 15 years as Events and Volunteer Coordinator at the American Horticultural Society at George Washington’s River Farm where she planned weddings, silent auctions and gala events. After retiring in 2004, Stephanie and Bruce moved to Hilton Head Island to be closer to Dana and her family. Retirement simply gave Stephanie more opportunities to do what she loved - staying busy, exploring new places around the Island with Bruce, working at ArtWare and Nell’s, finding the best bargain in town, and spending time with those she loved.

Of all the roles Stephanie held, “Grandma” was undoubtedly her favorite. She treasured every opportunity to spend time with her three grandchildren and delighted in creating traditions that they will carry with them always. Every Christmas Eve, each family member found a newly framed photograph waiting at their place setting, along with the tradition of writing down their favorite memories of the year and competed to guess the number of ornaments and lights on the tree. Stephanie understood that life’s simplest moments often became its most treasured memories.

Following Bruce’s passing, Stephanie moved to The Cypress, where she embraced every opportunity to make new friends, join activities, laugh, and have fun. She reminded everyone that it is never too late to choose joy, build new friendships, try something new, and make the most of each day.

Stephanie leaves behind a family who will continue her traditions, treasure the memories she so carefully preserved, and strive to live with the same intentional kindness and humility that defined her life. She is survived by her daughter Dana Quigley; son-in-law Mike; and grandchildren Jack, Katelyn, and Emily.

A service in her honor will be held Saturday, August 15th, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Stephanie’s memory by living a little more like she did: offer an unexpected compliment, celebrate a special occasion with a note, share a family tradition, find joy in a bargain, or pass along something you no longer need to someone who will treasure it. Stephanie will be remembered for the intentional ways she made people feel remembered and loved. She believed ordinary moments mattered, and because of the way she lived, countless ordinary moments became unforgettable.
