William "Bill" C. Inglesby
October 4, 1944 — May 8, 2026
William Cain Inglesby, known to most who loved him as Billy, passed away on May 8, 2026, at his home on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
He was 81 years old. Born on October 4, 1944, in Savannah, Georgia, Billy was the son of the late Samuel Powel Inglesby and Edith Cain Inglesby of Savannah. From his earliest years, he carried with him the warmth and grace of the Lowcountry, growing into what everyone who knew him would call a perfect Southern gentleman.
Billy was a natural athlete who excelled in high school football, and his talents extended far beyond the playing field. After graduating, he served two years in the United States Navy, a commitment he carried with quiet pride. He then earned his degree in Economics from the University of Georgia, where he became a lifelong, devoted Bulldogs fan. Billy went on to build a successful career as a partner in Carswell of Carolina Insurance Agency, where his honesty and integrity earned him the deep respect of colleagues and clients alike.
A true Renaissance man, Billy was gifted in so many ways. He could sit down at a piano or pick up a guitar and fill a room with music. He loved being out on the water, whether boating or fishing, and he treasured extended travels and the adventures they brought. More than anything, he cherished quality time with his family. Billy was also a dedicated member of the Rotary Club for years and gave generously to charitable causes close to his heart.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Ellery Inglesby, who was his steadfast companion through a life well lived. He is also survived by his loving daughters, Meredith Inglesby Blanchard(Steve), Catherine Inglesby Wooldridge(John); two granddaughters, Wren Blanchard and Vera Wooldridge; his sister, Eleanor Inglesby Binford(Marshall) of Atlanta; his sister-in-law, Gay Inglesby of Savannah; several nieces and nephews and many cousins. In addition to his parents, Billy is predeceased by his brother, Samuel Powel Inglesby.
Billy's kindness, honesty, generosity, and gentle spirit touched everyone fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in eternal peace. A private family service will be held with a Celebration of Life to follow at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to one’s favorite charity in memory of Billy.
