Gary Grant Brown — August 21, 2026 — “and the angels carried him”

Gary Grant Brown, a third-generation Colorado Springs native, passed away leaving behind a legacy of service, faith, adventure, and love. Descended from Scottish immigrants who helped pioneer the Pikes Peak region in the late 1800s, Gary carried a lifelong appreciation for Colorado’s mountains, rivers, and wide-open spaces.

Gary proudly served with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, retiring as a Homicide Sergeant. Known for his professionalism, investigative skill, and compassion, he dedicated his career to seeking justice and helping families find answers during their most difficult times. Guided by his faith in God the Father, Gary often provided comfort and encouragement to grieving families while pursuing justice on their behalf.

An avid outdoorsman, Gary loved fly fishing, skiing, hockey, camping, motorcycle trail riding, and exploring Colorado’s backcountry. He participated in the National Law Enforcement Ski Race in Vail, where he and two fellow officers captured first place, and he proudly played on the Law Enforcement Hockey Team, competing against local firefighters.

For more than fifty years, Gary and his beloved wife, Liz, shared a passion for adventure and Colorado’s high country, especially the Taylor Park region. Together they camped, fished, explored mountain trails, and rode motorcycles through some unforgettable terrain. In retirement, their adventures continued through travels to Yellowstone, the towering Grand Tetons, the Black Hills of South Dakota, and Mount Rushmore. They also loved cruising, from the soothing blue waters of the Caribbean to the breathtaking waterways and glaciers of Alaska, immersing themselves in the beauty of God’s creation.

Gary continued his spirit of service as a life member of the Sons of the American Legion, Post 38 where he served in leadership and enjoyed cooking alongside his friend Mark as well as a life member of the Elks Lodge 309.

A gifted craftsman, Gary was an accomplished woodworker and vehicle restorer who approached everything he created with patience and precision. He was also a professional photographer whose breathtaking images captured the beauty of Colorado and the American West.

Gary’s life was one of service, faith, craftsmanship, compassion, and adventure. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Liz, along with countless friends, colleagues, and community members whose lives were touched by his kindness, integrity, faith, and dedication to others.
