John Allen Calvert Davey
Jan 22, 1948 — Sep 4, 2026
John Allen Calvert Davey, 78, of Saguache, Colorado, passed away on September 4, 2026. He was a cherished father, brother, grandfather, and community member whose presence will be deeply missed. Allen loved the San Luis Valley and enjoyed spending time camping, hunting, fishing, and hiking in the mountains with his family.
Allen was born on January 22, 1948, in Monte Vista, Colorado, to John and Helen Davey. As the oldest of seven children, he grew up on the family ranch south of Saguache and graduated from Saguache High School. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University in 1971. While at CSU, Allen met the love of his life, Marilyn Joyce Sawyer. Shortly after graduation, the couple married and settled in Del Norte, where they raised their two daughters. In later years, they split their time between Monte Vista and the family ranch in Saguache, eventually making the ranch their permanent home. Allen moved to Colorado Springs in the fall of 2025 to be near family, where he peacefully passed away.
Allen began his professional career with Davis Engineering Service, Inc., providing civil engineering services throughout the San Luis Valley with a focus on water supply, treatment, water rights, and water resources. Allen had a servant’s heart and gave back to his community in numerous ways. Notable service included the Del Norte School Board, the St. Joseph Hospital and Nursing Home Board of Trustees, and the Rio Grande Hospital Foundation Board. Allen was also an active Rotary Club member, supported the Mount Lookout Observatory and Windsor Hotel renovations, and was a faithful member of Little Shepherd in the Hills Episcopal Church in Crestone.
Allen is survived by his daughters, Jenny Snyder (Matt) of Cheraw, Colorado, and Gwen Dall (Tyler) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; grandchildren, Ashley Zulauf (Tyler), Jonathan Snyder, Weston Dall, Jeffery Snyder (Lexington), Abigail Dall, and Caleb Dall; great-grandchildren, Logan, Raegan, Hugh, and Franklin; and siblings, Eric Davey (Faye), Jane Whitten, Everett Davey, Sandy Forester, and Doug Davey (Cindy). He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Marilyn; his grandson, Joshua Snyder; and his sister, Carol Saeugling.
