Leon William Helmbrecht
Sep 18, 1940 — Jul 25, 2026
Leon (Lee) Helmbrecht was born September 18, 1940, in Kasson, MN to Verla and Willard Helmbrecht. He passed away peacefully in his home on July 25, 2026.
Lee grew up on the family farm SE of Dodge Center, MN. He attended school in District 41, a one room schoolhouse with one teacher teaching grades 1-8. He graduated from Dodge Center Public School on May 26, 1958. He started Mankato Commercial College one week later, graduating with a Junior Accounting Certificate. Lee spent much of his career building a family and friendships at 2 main companies. He was with Midland Contractors/Midland Commonwealth who brought him back to Dodge Center for 21 ½ years and he was with UAP which moved the family to Le Sueur, MN for 17 years. In Le Sueur one of his “prize” activities was playing the baritone horn in the Greater Montgomery Bohemian Marching Band (that didn’t march) He finally ended his career at Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs, where they moved to be closer to their kids.
He met the love of his life, Rebecca (Becky) Helmbrecht at a District youth rally when he was a freshman, they reconnected years later when Becky was his grandfather's nurse and married soon after in October of 1963. They were married for 53 years before Becky’s passing.
They made friends wherever they went, Lee always put others first, above himself. Always keeping others in his thoughts and prayers. They were both always very active in their church and made a point of staying in touch with friends no matter where they moved to. He was a devout Christian and his faith carried him through many losses, Becky’s 2 bouts of cancer, and his own battles with health issues that stuck with him until his passing.
Lee was a devoted family man, father, husband, brother, uncle and friend. He was always up for conversation. And he genuinely cared about everyone he met, even if he never saw them again.
Lee was preceded in death by his wife Becky, son Michael, Brothers Chris & Dale, Brothers in Law, Ken & Don Fields and so many friends.
He is survived by his daughter Vicki, her husband Hoyt. Step-Grandkids Maty (Jeremiah) with 2 great grand kids. Jarret Sutphin & Brittan Sutphin. His sister Vera Schuck, his sister-in-law Jeanne Fields. And many nieces, nephews, & friends.
Service will be held on August 22 at 11:00 AM at Central United Methodist Church at 4373 Galley Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80915.
