Robert Lowell Mayne

Robert (Bob) Lowell Mayne, 94, passed away on June 18, 2026, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born April 29, 1932, in Dow City, Iowa where he spent his early years before moving to Omaha, Nebraska. After high school he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Following graduation, Bob answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. During a distinguished 21-year military career, he served as an Air Operations Officer and retired with the rank of Major. As a navigator, he flew aboard numerous aircraft, including the C-118, C-124, DC-9A Nightingale, and C-130. His exemplary service earned him numerous awards and citations, including the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, recognizing his dedication, professionalism, and contributions to the Air Force.

After retiring from military service, Bob began a second career with Colorado Springs School District 11, where he continued to serve his community for many years. Even after leaving the school district, his strong work ethic remained evident as he worked part-time for Avis Car Rental before enjoying a well-earned retirement.

Throughout his life, Bob was known for his commitment to service, his sense of responsibility, and his willingness to contribute wherever he was needed. He was devoted to his family, his community, and the activities he loved.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Bob dedicated fifteen years to coaching Little League baseball, where his teams enjoyed numerous first place finishes and city championships. One of his teams earned a berth in the Little League World Series regional tournament, an accomplishment that reflected not only his knowledge of the game but his commitment to teaching, encouraging, and inspiring young athletes. Bob was also a passionate fan of Colorado sports. A long-time season ticket holder for Air Force Academy football, he faithfully supported the Falcons for many years and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on. He was equally devoted to the Colorado Rockies and Colorado Avalanche, celebrating their successes and remaining loyal through every season. Those who knew Bob also knew there was very little he couldn't fix. A true jack of all trades, he took great pride in maintaining his home and working on his own vehicles, always preferring to tackle a repair himself whenever possible. His resourcefulness, determination, and willingness to lend a helping hand were qualities appreciated by family and friends alike.

In his later years, one of Bob’s greatest pleasures was meeting with friends over coffee. Their gatherings were filled with laughter, storytelling, good-natured jokes, and spirited conversations as they exchanged ideas on everything from everyday life to solving the world's problems. Those friendships remained an important and cherished part of his life. He was a devoted man of faith and a long-time member of Rustic Hills Babtist Church where he also had many valued friendships.

Bob is survived by his first wife and the mother of his children, Joann Mayne; his daughter, Debi Furay; his son, Michael Mayne; his sister, Lois (Jim) Shainholtz; and a large extended family of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, David Mayne; his second wife, Kay Mayne; and his siblings, Evelyn Ballantine, Jack Mayne, and Maryann Pigman.

Bob’s legacy extends far beyond his accomplishments. He will be remembered as a devoted father, a proud Air Force officer, a respected coach, a loyal friend, and a man who believed there was always a way forward. Whether serving his country, mentoring young ballplayers, repairing something with his own hands, or simply sharing coffee and conversation with friends, Bob approached life with determination, humility, and an unwavering sense of purpose. Of the many lessons he passed on to his children, perhaps the greatest was a simple one: never give up. It was a principle he lived every day and one that continues to guide those whose lives he touched. His strength, perseverance, generosity, and quiet example will remain an enduring part of his legacy, and he will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
