Clyde Irvin Baker, age 82, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family.
Born on December 10, 1943, in Great Falls, South Carolina, Clyde lived a life defined by service, faith, dedication, and love for his family. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, where his exceptional commitment and leadership earned him the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service. During his military career, he was instrumental in ensuring the success of the largest awards program in the history of the United States Air Force, a distinction that reflected his diligence, professionalism, and devotion to excellence.
Following his military service, Clyde continued to exemplify a strong work ethic throughout his career with Columbia Supply, Carolina Ceramics, and later with Enterprise. He was respected by colleagues and friends alike for his reliability, integrity, and willingness to help others.
A devoted man of faith, Clyde was a longtime member of Temple Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a deacon, usher, and Sunday school teacher. His commitment to his church family and his desire to serve others left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Beyond his professional and church life, Clyde had a passion for sports and community involvement. For 30 years, he served as a USSSA umpire, dedicating countless hours to the game he loved and mentoring athletes through his fairness, knowledge, and sportsmanship.
Above all else, Clyde treasured his family. He shared a loving marriage of 59 years with his wife, Mary Baker, and found his greatest joy in being a husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Baker; his daughter Christie (Bob) McCloy; his son, Chad (Jayne) Baker; six grandchildren - Isabelle Baker, Lillie McCloy, Sydney Baker, Rawlins McCloy, Price McCloy, Bennett Baker; and his sister, Carolyn Wingate. His love, guidance, and unwavering support will remain a cherished legacy in their lives.
Those who knew Clyde will remember his humble spirit, steadfast faith, sense of duty, and genuine kindness. Whether serving his country, his church, his community, or his family, he gave of himself wholeheartedly and without hesitation.
Clyde's life was a testament to honor, service, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, church family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
