David E. Mozie

Jan 2, 1949 — Oct 11, 2026

David Edwin Mozie, a devoted husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on Oct. 11, 2026, at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Columbia, South Carolina, on Jan. 2, 1949, to Daniel E. and Annie E. Mozie, and attended Waverly Elementary School, W.A. Perry Middle School, and Booker T. Washington High School.

While at Booker T. Washington, he played snare drum as part of the high school band, known as the Marching 100. Also part of that ensemble was Jacqueline L. Dorch, who was a majorette and David’s high school sweetheart. Together, with their bandmates, they performed at events across the region and the country, including the Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington, D.C.

David graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1967 and married Jacqueline later that year. He attended South Carolina State College (now University) in Orangeburg, South Carolina, where he was part of the Marching “101” Band.

Following his studies at S.C. State, David joined the Xerox Corp. in 1971 in Columbia as the first African American service technician in the company’s Charlotte region. His career at Xerox included receiving multiple President’s Club awards and a stint as a technical supervisor. David was always interested in new technology that Xerox helped pioneer. Along with his colleagues, he was instrumental in learning about and installing new technology for Xerox’s customers. He retired from Xerox in 2006 after 35 years of service.

In his retirement, he spent time caring for his family, cheering on his Los Angeles Dodgers and Cleveland Browns – win or lose – while also tailgating at S.C. State football games home and away with friends who called themselves “The Posse,” and volunteering. A devoted S.C. State Bulldog, he enhanced his love for his alma mater by serving as parking committee chair for the Athletics Department’s booster club, the STATE Club.

He also served his longtime spiritual home, Second Calvary Baptist Church, in many capacities. One could find him cooking in the church’s kitchen for various events, “singing” with the Brotherhood Club, and serving on the church’s Trustee Board. He was also an integral part of the construction of Second Calvary’s current church building, which opened in 2006.

David was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Daniel, Jr; and his daughter, Nicole. He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Jacqueline; his daughter, Davette; his son, Dante; his brother-in-law, Anthony (Rebecca) Dorch; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends who dearly loved him.
