Evon – Her Life

Evon Deloris Montgomery Whitt was born on May 2, 1956, in Columbia, South Carolina. She was the eldest daughter of Mrs. Evelyn Reese Montgomery and the late Mr. Henry Burgess Montgomery. Surrounded by her loving family, she peacefully departed this earthly life on July 4, 2026.

Evon graduated from Eau Claire High School and attended Midlands Technical College, where she majored in Secretarial Science. She retired from the South Carolina Department of Revenue after 33 years of dedicated service. While employed there, she also worked part-time at J. B. White Department Store for 17 years. Even while balancing both a full-time and part-time job, Evon faithfully volunteered as a Lunch Buddy at a local school. After retirement, she continued her commitment to serving others by volunteering with Meals on Wheels.

Evon – Her Faith

Evon was a devoted member of Stover Chapel AME Church for many years before transferring her membership to Pine Grove AME Church in Columbia, South Carolina. Throughout her years of faithful stewardship, she served in numerous leadership roles across the Columbia Conference.

Within the Columbia District, she served as Local Director of the Young People's Department (YPD) of the Women's Missionary Society, Columbia District YPD Co-Director, and Columbia District Women's Missionary Society Promotion and Mission Education Director. At the Columbia Conference level, Evon served as Women's Missionary Society Promotion and Mission Education Director and later as 1st Vice President. A dedicated member of the Women's Missionary Society for more than 25 years, she was honored as a Torch Lighter for the Newberry District in September 2016.

In the Newberry District, Evon also served as the Women's Missionary Society Local Assistant Recording Secretary, Local 1st Vice President, and Local 2nd Vice President. She also faithfully supported the mission as the Local Lay Organization as 1st Vice President, President, and Assistant Secretary. At the district level, she served as the Newberry District Lay Organization's 3rd Vice President and Corresponding Secretary. On the conference level, she served as 3rd Vice President.

Evon also enjoyed working with the Church Women United (Columbia Unit) Celebration Committee, where she assisted with program planning. She delighted audiences by participating in several skits and was known as a gifted and graceful reader.

At Pine Grove AME Church, Evon faithfully served as a Stewardess, Usher, Greeter, Choir Member, Chair of the Class Leader Council, College and Career Ministry leader, and Christian Education Director. She was recognized by her local church as both Lay Person of the Year and Missionary of the Year. At the conference level, she was also honored as the Women's Missionary Society's Missionary of the Year in recognition of her volunteer service in local schools.

Evon was a member of the Pine Grove Adult and Continuing Education Class at the Pine Grove Community Center. She cheerfully took on the role of Assistant Secretary in 2024.

Evon loved to sing God’s praises. She participated on the Pine Grove Voices of Praise Choir, Pine Grove Community Choir, Newberry District Choir and Columbia Conference Choir.

Above all, Evon loved the Lord, her family, and her church family. She lived by her favorite scripture, Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

Evon - Her Legacy

Evon was proceeded in death by her father, Henry B. Montgomery and her sister, Shirley Montgomery Milhouse, and her nephew, Quintin Nunn.

Evon’s memory will be forever cherished by her husband, Alfonso Whitt; daughters, Nicole (Eric) Berry and Brenda (Tim) Culbreath; six grandchildren, Rasheeda Martin, Aaliyah Hill, Ny’tasia Martin, Nia Berry, Ty’keem Martin, and Hannah Berry; four great-grandchildren, Ayden Mathis, Londyn Copeland, Mason Ryan, and Remiere Leaphart; her mother, Evelyn Reese Montgomery; sisters, Gloria (Michael) Addison, Jennifer Williams; brother, Leon Montgomery; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Betty Mae Whitt, Rosa Lee Whitt, Jessie Mae Jeffery, Darlene Jeffery, Randy Jeffery, Terry (Cheryl) Jeffery, Jo Ann (Ron) Hughes, Shirley (Micheal) Friday, David (Mildred) Jeffrey, Carry Jeffery, Sylvester Leaphart, Laura Retha Leaphart, Diane Leaphart, Sylvia (Willie) Nelson, Brenda (Ronald) Tolen, and Alphonzo (Rosa) Leaphart; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving family and friends who will all miss her dearly.
