Herman Van Yarbrough, 93. Loving husband to Nellie Lois Geddings Yarbrough, passed quietly in his sleep Sunday, August 16, 2026, at Prisma Baptist Hospital in Columbia, SC.
Born in Johnsonville, SC October 8, 1932, he was one of four sons to the Late Willie Yarbrough and the Late Mary Howard Yarbrough of Sumter, SC.
Raised in the Nazarene church from childhood, he knew and trusted Jesus as his Lord and Savior.
Retired Truck Driver for more than 40 years. He served in the US Airforce from 1952 – 1959 as Air Police during the Korean Conflict. A lifetime member of the VFW.
Our Daddy's favorite pass time was watching Atlanta Braves Baseball games, visiting friends and extended family, a good Steak cooked on the grill, sitting outside waving to and talking with neighbors as they passed by. He never met a stranger; he could strike up a conversation with anyone.
His happiest moments were when he married the love of his life, Nellie Lois Geddings Yarbrough, on November 13, 1952. Spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Daddy never failed to let us children know just how much he loved us, he would always say, "I love you kids, more than you could possibly know."
He is survived by his wife, Nellie L. Geddings Yarbrough of Lexington; sons, Michael V. Yarbrough, Sr. (Joyce) of West Columbia, Everette D. Yarbrough, of Missouri; daughter, Nancy Roberts (Joe) of Spartanburg, Lena Mae DeWolfe (Randy), of Pontiac; three granddaughters, Mary Flake, Carol Reynolds (Ashley), and Belinda Wells (Phil); five grandsons, Michael V. Yarbrough, Jr. (Kim), Chevy DeWolfe (Meredith), Christopher Yarbrough (Jessica), Jon Freeman (CJ, Benny Freeman; eighteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Turner Mathis (Bo) of Sumter; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his precious daughter, Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough, and grandson Calvin Yarbrough, now they rejoice in heaven together; three brothers, Jerry Yarbrough, Willard Yarbrough and Frank Yarbrough; four sisters, Anne Louise McDonald, Dorothy Griffin, Lena Mae Lucas, and Dixie Lee Turner; parents, Willie Yarbrough and Mary Howard Yarbrough of Sumter.
