Margaret Day Walters
Aug 12, 1929 — Sep 19, 2026
Margaret Day Walters, age 97, of Columbia, S.C., crossed over to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at home in the presence of her family. She was born on August 12, 1929, in Wilmington, N.C., the daughter of the late L. Franklin Walker and Eunice Woodard Young. Day, as she was known, was a homemaker who dedicated herself to her family, her church, and her friends. She was a loving and dedicated wife, and she provided guidance, inspiration, and love to her two sons and her grandchildren.
Day was a committed and faithful member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church in Columbia for over 58 years. Over the years, she was involved in Sunday school classes, prayer groups, Bible studies, and various ladies' circle activities. She also served in visitation for individuals with disabling conditions. With her patience and gentleness, she provided a reassuring presence to her friends and family. She was also an artist who loved painting in pastels. She never wished to paint professionally, doing so only for the joy that it brought and for her love of art.
Day was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Rudy V. Walters.
She is survived by her brother, L. Franklin Walker Jr. of Panama City, Fla. She is also survived by her sons, Rudy J. Walters of Columbia, and David B. Walters and daughter-in-law Joanne W. Walters of Charlotte, N.C. Additionally, she leaves behind her grandchildren: Rudy J. Walters, Jr. and his wife Stephanie of Salem, Va.; Ashley Walters Skrypek and her husband Tony of Hampstead, N.C.; and Tara Talbert of Charlotte, N.C. Her memory will also be cherished by her great-grandchildren, Savannah Skrypek and Ramsey Skrypek of Hampstead, N.C., and Brea Thompson of Charlotte, N.C., as well as a number of other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church. Immediately following the service, she will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in her memory to Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, 1005 Asbury Drive, Columbia, S.C. 29209
