Nellie Winn Smith

Nell Smith, 96, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

Born in Bessemer City, North Carolina, Nellie was the daughter of the late Debrick Winn and Lona Winn.

Nellie married the love of her life, Bill McDowell Smith, on August 19, 1948. Together they shared 78 wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered on faith, family, and service to others.

A faithful member of Shandon Baptist Church, Nellie lived her Christian faith daily. She enjoyed walking on the beach at Pawley’s Island, caring for her beloved cats, and packing shoebox gifts for children around the world through the Samaritan's Purse ministry. Her kindness, generosity, and servant's heart touched many lives.

Nellie was preceded in death by her son, Brant M. Smith, who passed away on December 25, 2024, and by her beloved sister, Shirley Spargo.

She is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Bill Smith; her granddaughter, Brantlee Elwell (Dale Elwell); her great-grandchildren, Caleb Elwell, Andrew Elwell (Jayleine Elwell), Hannah Elwell, and Hope Elwell; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Nellie will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. More than anything, Nellie loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and found strength and comfort in her faith throughout her life. Her family rejoices in the assurance that she now rests peacefully in His loving arms.

Her legacy of faith, love, and compassion will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
