James Carl Grossman

James Carl Grossman passed away peacefully on August 3, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories and the enduring love of his family.

James shared a deep love and devotion with his wife, Diana. Together, they built a life centered around family, adventure, and unwavering love. Rarely was James away from Diana’s side, and the love they shared will live on in the hearts of the family and friends who surrounded them.

James will be remembered not only for his devotion to Diana, but also for his 21 years of service in the United States Army, where he served as a flight instructor and devoted patriot. He took great pride in his military service. James and Diana also loved to travel, especially cruising throughout the Caribbean, and were always looking forward to planning their next adventure.

Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, James grew up surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of Bobbie Nell Judkins Von Huevel and James Carl Grossman and was preceded in death by his parents. Affectionately known as “Butch” by his sisters and brother, James shared a special bond with his siblings, Wanda Grossman Hale, Johnnie Grossman Batten, and Michael Von Huevel.

James had a love for Clemson football, Dallas Cowboys, the Beach Boys, and the Rolling Stones. He enjoyed watching old Westerns, MASH, The Andy Griffith Show, and Bonanza. These simple pleasures, along with his love of travel and family, brought him great joy throughout his life.

James is survived by his wife, Diana; his daughters, Valarie Vallee of Atlanta, Georgia, and her husband, Matthew Vallee, and Erika Huggins of Columbia, South Carolina, and her husband, Will Huggins. He was a proud grandfather to Caroline Grace Vallee, Catherine Elizabeth Vallee, William Hudson Huggins, and Lennon Hayes Huggins.

He is also survived by his stepson, Curtis Fulmer, his wife, Muffy, and their daughter, Merritt.

James is also survived by his sister, Wanda Grossman Hale, and her sons, Steven Holden and Jason Holden; his sister, Johnnie Grossman Batten, and her son, Bryan Smith; and his brother, Michael Von Huevel.

James will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who will forever cherish the memories of his love, devotion, humor, patriotism, and adventurous spirit.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Northside Baptist Church, located at 4347 Sunset Boulevard, Lexington, SC 29072. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Entombment will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, located at 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229.
