Lonnie C. Vess

It is with deep sadness that Lonnie Claude Vess, 84, of Gilbert, SC, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, August 17, 2026.

Lonnie was born in Marion, NC on January 26, 1942 to Hettie Sherrill Vess. He was a graduate of Dentsville High School.

Lonnie’s career began at The Coca Cola Company where he worked driving a delivery truck and was soon promoted to sales and marketing manager where he won many awards and enjoyed traveling nationally and making numerous lifelong friends.

Later he transitioned into self - employment where he owned The Ancient Mariner Seafood Restaurant for over 20 years. He also enjoyed working with Thomas and Howard Company as a food broker where he eventually retired. He valued his coworkers and considered them true friends.

When Lonnie wasn’t working he enjoyed golfing in the fall of the year at Waynesville Country Club N.C. Many evenings and early mornings you could find him sitting on his back porch enjoying Lake Murray along with the deer, cranes, ducks and other wildlife that visited his yard. Above all, he enjoyed being with his family especially his grandchildren Savannah and Thad.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Jean Dennis Vess; daughters, Lisa Bustle (Neill) of Gilbert, SC and Claudia Zeigler (Jake) of Chapin, SC; grandchildren, Savannah Bustle and Thad Bustle of Gilbert, SC; niece, Melodie Sisk of Atlanta, GA - all of whom he loved dearly.

Lonnie was predeceased by his daughter, Sheri Vess; brothers, Raymond Sisk and Lecil Vess; sister, Arkey Lou Vess Brock; and nephew, Ronnie Brock.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, August 21, 2026 at Thompson Funeral Home, 4720 Augusta Rd. Lexington, SC 29073, with visitation prior from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. Burial will be held after the funeral service at the Beulah Methodist Church Cemetery located at 161 Beulah Church Rd Gilbert, SC 29054.
