Margaret L. Smith

Margaret Louise Smith, affectionately known to her grandchildren as “Granny” and to her great-grandchildren as “Old Granny,” passed away on August 22, 2026, in Lexington, SC, at the age of 89. She spent her final days at Lexington Heath Carroll Campbell Place, where she received excellent and compassionate care. Her family is deeply grateful for the kindness shown to her during her final days.

Margaret was born on January 14, 1937, and was from Statesboro, GA. She lived a life centered around her faith, her family, hard work and was a woman known for her strength, humor, and adventurous spirit. Margaret was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Clarence Merle “Smitty” Smith, who passed away on June 2, 2024. Smitty was a military veteran, and Margaret was incredibly proud to be the wife of a veteran. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Phyllis Dyches, and her siblings, Jessie “Junior” Young and Ben Young. She is survived by her sister, Joanne Fleming, her son Donald Lamar Coursey and his wife, Louise; and her daughter Jeannie Heanderson and her husband Joe. She leaves behind five grandchildren: Donnie Coursey (Dana); Jennifer Bolin (Doug); Amanda; and Samantha (Eric). She was blessed with ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grand child.

But perhaps no one knew Margaret quite like her grandchildren. To them she as simply “Granny”. Margaret loved having her grandchildren around and would welcome them into her home for many weeks in the summer, filling those days with swimming, adventures, and plenty of root beer floats. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was always willing to join in the fun – even roller skating later in life.

Margaret was a devoted member of Pineview Baptist Church in Augusta, Ga. In her earlier years, she was known as a joyful Sunday school teacher at Broad Street Baptist and August First Church of the Nazarene who loved the children entrusted to her care. She didn’t simply teach them – she encouraged them and took seriously the opportunity to disciple and guide them in their faith.

Margaret was a hardworking woman who spent part of her life as a mill worker and devoted many years to being a homemaker. She found joy in the simple things and will be remembered for her faith, strength, humor, and love of family.

Her family takes comfort in knowing that Margaret is now at peace with her Lord and reunited with Smitty and the loved ones who went before her.

Service Information:

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 11:00am to 12:00pm at Thompson Funeral Home, 4720 Augusta Road Lexington, SC. The funeral service will be from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. A luncheon will be held following the service.

Graveside service will be held at 4:00pm at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 2648 Jefferson Davis Highway Graniteville, SC

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Pineview Baptist Church, 119 Pleasant Home Road Augusta, Ga or Alzheimer’s Care – Carroll Campbell Place, 802 Old Cherokee Road Lexington, SC 29072 in Margaret’s memory. Margaret also supported St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an organization that was close to her heart.
