Carmelo Cannavaro

Carmelo Cannavaro, a beloved husband, father, nonno, brother, zio, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was a devoted family man whose love, kindness, and dedication to those around him will never be forgotten.

Born on August 13, 1932, Carmelo was the son of Giuseppe and Marianna Cannavaro. Born and raised in Librizzi, Sicily, he carried his hometown and Italian heritage in his heart throughout his life, cherishing the traditions, values, food, and family that connected him to his roots.

He was the beloved husband of Maria, with whom he shared a beautiful life and built a loving family. Together, they created a home filled with love, laughter, tradition, and countless memories.

Above all else, family was everything to Carmelo. He was a devoted father to Marianne and Giuseppe, a cherished Nonno to Brandon, Carmelo, Matthew, Melissa, and Gianna, and a beloved Zio to his many nieces and nephews.

Carmelo was a hardworking man who took great pride in everything he did. He dedicated more than 20 years to the Rockland County Highway Department, where his strong work ethic and commitment reflected the values he lived by. He taught his family to work hard and to always care for one another.

Some of the most treasured memories were the simple moments spent together. His grandchildren would gather in the kitchen while he cooked, and he always found a way to let them help. He taught them how to cook, work with their hands, and appreciate the way food brings family together.

He also took great pride in his garden, especially his tomatoes and the vegetables he grew with patience and care. He enjoyed making his own wine and sauce, carrying on the traditions he brought with him from Sicily and sharing them with his family. He also cherished the hunting trips he took with his brother-in-law, Mike, creating memories that remained special to him throughout his life. His garden, his cooking, his time spent outdoors, and the traditions he passed down were a reflection of who he was - hardworking, generous, and deeply connected to his family and his roots.

Many cherished memories were made during family trips to Arthur Avenue, where good food, family, and tradition always came together. These everyday outings became traditions that his family will carry with them for years to come.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Maria; his children, Marianne (Al) Megali and Giuseppe Cannavaro; and his cherished grandchildren, Brandon, Carmelo, Matthew, Melissa, and Gianna. He will also be lovingly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends, all of whom will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

Carmelo was predeceased by his parents, Giuseppe and Marianna Cannavaro; his brother, Antonio (Vittoria) Cannavaro; his daughter-in-law, Helene Cannavaro; sisters-in-law Josephine (Santo) Ardiri and Carmela Peluso; brothers-in-law Mike Schiavone and Biagio Giuttari; his in-laws, Maria Santa and Carmelo Giuttari; and his beloved best friend, Angelo Isidore.

Thank you for a lifetime of love, sacrifice, and devotion to your family. You worked hard, never complained, and always made sure your family had everything they needed. Through the way you lived your life, you taught us the importance of hard work, putting family first, and always being there for the people you loved. Most of all, thank you for loving us so deeply and unconditionally. We will carry your love, your lessons, and your example with us for the rest of our lives.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026, from 4pm-8pm at TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home in Garnerville, NY. Mass will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, 9am at St. Peter’s Church, Haverstraw, followed by a private cremation.
