Bertram DMello

Bertram DMello was born on January 4, 1938, in Mumbai to Edmond and Alice D'Mello. His name began with the second letter of the alphabet, fitting neatly among his siblings: an older brother, Arthur, and sisters Clythe, Diana, and Elaine.

He grew up surrounded by family orchards and a delightful menagerie of animals and birds, an environment that nurtured a lifelong love of nature, plants, and animals. Bertram pursued his studies in Mechanical and Automobile Engineering at Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute, where he developed the knowledge and skills that would shape his professional life.

A true automobile enthusiast, he had a special passion for cars. His business was dedicated to repairing and restoring vehicles, and he took great pride in ensuring they ran smoothly and quietly, free from every rattle and noise. It was through his sister Diana that he met Tulip, the love of his life. Their meeting marked the beginning of an extraordinary partnership that lasted 56 wonderful years.

Bertram named his son, Lincoln, after both the admired American president and the renowned automobile brand, reflecting his appreciation for history and automobiles alike. His daughter, Giselle, was named after the beloved French ballet, reflecting another of his many interests and inspirations.

He travelled widely and was a member of the International student exchange program. One of his most memorable adventures was a visit to Russia during the Cold War, an experience that left a lasting impression on him. Bertram was deeply involved in the Lions Club and actively participated in its many charitable activities, always eager to give back to his community.

Known for his warm hospitality, Bertram loved bringing family and friends together, creating countless cherished memories. He found great joy in tending his farm, planting trees, and watching them flourish. He brought warmth, generosity, and good humor to those around him.

Bertram will be remembered for his wit and humor, his quiet strength and wisdom, his passion for cars, and his deep love of nature, all of which he shared generously with his family and friends. His legacy lives on in the people he loved, the lives he touched, and the values he passed on to future generations.

A funeral Mass to celebrate his life will be held Tuesday, August 25, 2026 at 11:00 am at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC, 28211.
