Billy Ervin Lewis
Nov 2, 1932 — Sep 1, 2026
Billy E. Lewis “Bill” passed away September 1, 2026 in Gastonia, NC at the age of 93.
He was born in Lexington, NC on November 2, 1932 and was the son of the late Grady Hill Lewis and Fannie Mae McGhee. He was the last survivor of his 9 siblings.
He was a Veteran in the U.S. Army and served as an Interpreter/Interrogator after mastering the Korean language. He married in 1955 in Monterey, CA to his sweetheart Gurline A. Compton and they spent the majority of their life together in Charlotte NC. They had two children; Myra L. Lewis and Michael S. Lewis.
He was employed at the Bank of Commerce, J.A. Jones Construction, Charlotte Block and in his later years the Dowd YMCA. He was a member of Flint Groves Baptist Church in Gastonia NC. His love of sports varied from baseball, bowling on a league, golf and also Putt Putt. Golf and Putt Putt were his favorite past times. If you ever asked my mother….he lived on the golf course (even when I was born that’s where he was).
He loved his family with all his heart and would have done anything for them.
He is preceded in death by his wife Gurline A. Lewis and his son Michael S. Lewis.
Surviving family members are his daughter Myra L. Helms, Grandsons: Jantzen M. Lewis (Kayla), Spencer R. Helms (Chloe), Great grandchildren: Stella L. Helms, Zayleigh B. Lewis and Jayden C. Lewis.
In addition he had numerous nephews and nieces that were also a big part of his life.
We celebrate his life from this earth to the streets of gold where we will meet again.
A memorial service will be held at Flint Groves Baptist Church, 2017 E. Ozark Ave., Gastonia, NC, 28054, on September 19th 2026 at 11:30 AM
