David John Haney

It is with profound sadness that our family announces the sudden passing of David John Haney, aged 69, on 7/13/26. Dave is preceded in death by mother Shirley Haney, and survived by father John Haney, son Jon Sanz (Amanda), grandson Greyson, sisters Kate Wittenberg and Mary Bidon, brother Paul Haney (Mona) and nieces Grace, Alexandra, Abby and Erin, and three nephews, Matt, Auston and Logan.

Dave’s early life was marked by outstanding athleticism in baseball, wrestling, and excelling in hockey at the Phalen Youth Club and later at Johnson High School where his name appeared in many newspaper clippings. He also taught himself to play the guitar and was a member of many different bands, playing guitar and bass, most recently for the Gawd Awful Band. After high school Dave became a successful industrial tool salesman across the U.S. for Ingersall Rand, Proto and Challenger tools. Later he returned to the Twin City area and worked selling new and used cars. He was a natural in relating with people. Later in life he bumped around in Arizona and Minnesota trying his hand at home remodeling and renovation, becoming a jack-of-all-trades, installing floors, drywall, and painting. Most recently Dave worked for Hospice and later provided in-home care for elderly clients. He was an aspiring chef, always eager to try something new.

Dave was a member of the AA/NA community for over four decades. He found his niche in the recovery community, and particularly at The Recovery Church, where he found the support he needed and where he was known as a tireless worker and a friend to all. His family has been in awe by the outpouring of love from friends, the recovery community, and those who related stories of his loyal friendship, generosity and service to others. Dave took great comfort in his love and faith in God and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The happiest day of Dave’s life was just over one year ago when he first learned of his son Jon, daughter-in-law Amanda, and his grandson Greyson. Dave’s memory will continue to live in the hearts and minds of who knew and loved him.

Dave’s Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, August 21, 2026 at The Recovery Church, 253 State Street, S., St. Paul, MN. Visitation at 10:00 AM, service at 11:00 and luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to family.
