Edward Raymond Jorgensen Ii
May 3, 1961 — September 4, 2025
Dr. Edward R. Jorgensen II of Las Vegas, NV passed away September 4, 2025 at age 64 after a short illness. He was born in Chicago, IL to Edward and Jessie Jorgensen, and was the oldest of four children.
Growing up in Elk Grove Village, IL, Ed was interested in technology and electronics at an early age, once building his own telephone line between his and a friend's house while he was in early high school. He also earned his Amateur Radio license as a teenager, later obtaining the call sign KF7HI. In 1977 the family moved to Henderson, NV to be near grandparents, and Ed went to VoTech High School, graduating in 1979.
After high school he enrolled in the Computer Science program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, beginning a more than 45 year association with the University. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1984, then continued on to earn his Master of Science in Computer Science in 1991, and later his Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science in 2019.
While he worked full-time over the years for various companies associated with the U.S. Department of Energy, his real passion was educating young college students. He taught CS courses for the department for over 40 years, introducing thousands of undergraduate students to assembly language and systems programming. He retired from teaching in 2025 with the title Emeritus Associate Professor in Residence of Computer Science. He was the longest-serving faculty member in the Department of Computer Science in the Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering at UNLV.
Ed is survived by his wife of 33 years Rudolpha (Dolly) Jorgensen of Las Vegas, as well as his sister Misty Jorgensen, brother Mark Jorgensen of Henderson, and brother Michael Jorgensen of Las Vegas. A private celebration of life will be held on September 18. Donations in Ed's name may be made to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Foundation.
