John August Zimmerman

Oct 23, 1991 — Oct 7, 2026

John August Zimmerman, 34, of Fort Collins, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a difficult health journey.

After graduating from Rocky Mountain High School in 2010, he attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, then returned to Fort Collins to earn his bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Management from Colorado State University in 2021.

John delighted in the natural world, especially cloud formations and sunsets, which he often photographed. He treasured time outdoors with family and friends—camping, fishing, hiking, and river rafting—and cared deeply about protecting the environment. His adventurous spirit also took him to music festivals and on travels throughout the United States and abroad with a wide circle of companions. Warm and outgoing, John could strike up a conversation with anyone and bring laughter to any moment with his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor.

John’s curiosity and creativity enriched every part of his life. He loved to cook and worked in area restaurants. A naturally gifted musician, he played the piano, guitar, and drums. He also followed current events and pursued a wide range of interests. His broad knowledge and genuine interest in others helped him connect with people from all walks of life.

John shared an especially close bond with his sister, Jessica. While living near one another in Durango, they cherished weekly family meals, gatherings with friends, and many joyful moments. Close in age, they stayed in constant contact over the years. His parents and sister will miss him deeply.

John is survived by his parents, David and Debra Zimmerman of Fort Collins; his sister, Jessica of Centennial, Colorado; his grandfather, Ben Zimmerman of Loveland; his grandmother, Lorraine Johnson of Emmetsburg, Iowa; and many beloved cousins, aunts, and uncles. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Richard Johnson, and his grandmother, Norma Zimmerman. His family and friends will remember him for his warmth, humor, adventurous spirit, and enduring love of life.

Those wishing to honor John’s memory may contribute to Pathways of Northern Colorado or a local organization dedicated to natural resource conservation or environmental protection.
