Michael Jay Burton

Michael Jay Burton, 79, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 18, 2026, in Loveland, Colorado, after battling Lewy body dementia. He met even its cruelest challenges with his signature strength, determination, grit and humor.

Although people worldwide recognize Mike as a three-time Olympic gold medalist, to those closest to him, he was so much more. Friends and family will fondly remember his positive nature, love of cooking, appreciation for a good Sunday morning Bloody Mary and enjoyment of reading, camping and antique car shows. Above all, Mike loved traveling with his wife of 39 years, Carol, who was by his side until his final breath.

Mike was born July 3, 1947, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Edward and Bernice (Overton) Burton. He was one year old when his family moved to California, where he grew up in the Sacramento area. After suffering injuries in a bicycle accident that forced him to give up contact sports, Mike swam his first competitive race at age 14.

With a fierce competitive spirit and a rigorous training regimen that earned him the nickname “Iron Mike,” he had already won 10 AAU swimming titles, among other honors, before graduating from El Camino High School in 1965.

Mike went on to attend UCLA, where he won five NCAA individual titles and earned two Olympic gold medals before graduating in 1971.

Among his many legendary athletic accomplishments, Mike was most proud of becoming the first man to win the Olympic 1,500-meter freestyle at two consecutive Games. He earned two gold medals at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games in the 1,500- and 400-meter freestyle, followed by a third at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, where he set a world record of 15 minutes, 52.58 seconds in the 1,500-meter freestyle. In Munich, Mike was also honored to carry the U.S. flag during the closing ceremony.

As one of the most accomplished swimmers of his generation, Mike set seven world records and 16 American records. In recognition of his achievements, he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as an “Honor Swimmer,” as well as into the UCLA and Sacramento Sports Halls of Fame. He received numerous other athletic honors.

After retiring from competitive swimming, Mike turned his passion for the sport toward coaching, leading teams in his hometown of Des Moines and throughout the country. His coaching career also included guiding Brigham Young University to its first swimming conference championship. Known for his demanding coaching style and belief in his athletes’ true potential, Mike earned the respect of many accomplished swimmers who credit him with pushing them beyond what they ever believed possible.

Some of Mike’s most treasured personal experiences included a 10-day trip to Europe with his brother and sister, where they walked in the footsteps of their father, who served in World War II. He also cherished a two-week road trip to California with Carol and their grandsons, Casey and Zack, during which he shared childhood memories and introduced them to the places that held special meaning for him.

In his later years, Mike enjoyed quiet days working on jigsaw puzzles while watching western movies, “The Price Is Right” or “Wheel of Fortune.”

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Bernice Burton. He is survived by his wife, Carol (Hoyt) Burton; sister, Barbara Davis; brother, Randall (Kimberly) Burton; children, Eric (Amanda) Burton and Loni (Ken) Vander Kooi; stepchildren Brook (Kelly) Kramer, Babette (Chris) Ponder, Brady Palmer and Brocke Palmer (Andrea); niece, Kellie Rushton; nephews, Rick (Jan) Bonham and Drew Burton; and six grandchildren, Casey (Ciara) and Zack Kramer, Annie and Jeffrey Burton, and Kyle and Kayla Vander Kooi.

The family is planning celebrations of life for Mike in, Colorado, Montana, California and Iowa, with details to be shared at a later date.
