Susan Adrienne Young Carter

Susan Adrienne Young Carter passed into the spiritual realm on August 29, 2026 after a year-long battle with uterine cancer.

She was no ordinary being and lived a very creative and purposeful existence making long-life relationships with both family and friends along the way. Her friends, one and all, became family to her and remained so.

She was born August 8, 1940 to Fred and Lois Young in Cheyenne Wyoming and came with many cherished talents – the earliest of these manifesting at 3 months of age when, after waking from her little infant nap, her mother discovered her whistling. What a surprise!

She grew up in Cheyenne and Longmont Colorado as her parents developed their furniture, drapery and interior design business and eventually settled in Cheyenne.

Susan had a great appreciation of humor which became essential during her later years in high school when she was introduced to the very tall and handsome young man, Thomas L. Carter whom she described as being completely surrounded by shining light when they first met each other. The year after graduating from Cheyenne Central High School, Susan married Tom in 1959 and as a young couple, they moved to Laramie where she joined him in attending the University of Wyoming.

Susan’s intentions were to pursue her education in becoming an Art Teacher. She was a very talented and accomplished artist who loved color and created many works over her lifetime which were gifted and distributed among friends and family over the years. Her avid interest in jewelry making was the cap to her creative pursuits and she found great satisfaction in each unique piece that she designed.

Life, as it were, had other plans for her and the art degree was forfeited in lieu of becoming a mother to Barry Alan Carter and Cynthiann Carter (Daniels) and in 1968, this young family moved to Greeley Colorado where her husband could pursue his career path and Susan entered into the realm of being a working mother.

While continuing to produce beautiful artwork, she found herself excelling in a variety of bookkeeping positions and eventually working at Aims Community College in Dr. Beaty’s office while simultaneously attending classes which allowed her to obtain her formal education in accounting as well as psychology.

Susan believed in family and was always devising ways to help, if possible, or at least offer solutions. She was a superb counselor & listener, often offering insight or a broader perspective on matters of concern. She had an excellent memory and was loved for the telling of a good story, especially about family history. She loved: to talk, to have conversations for hours, and good, juicy gossip! Her biggest fascination, however, involved parapsychology and the realm of the paranormal and spiritual phenomenon. She had much passion for these subjects and considered herself a maverick of exploring a great many facets thereof. She hosted a weekly meditation and study group where many topics of a psychic and spiritual nature were discussed. She was trained in Past Life Regression, Palm Reading, Astrology and Handwriting Analysis but her most special talent was her gift of being psychic which was recognized by her father at a young age when he received her counsel on who to trust with his business dealings. Although she felt compelled to remain low-key in this regard and would caution her family by saying “Shshsh, don’t tell anyone!”, Susan continued to develop and put into practice her intuitive skills. She was adamant that if she could help others through this gift then she would endeavor to do so. One example of this was her collaboration with law enforcement to bring resolution to 2 separate murder cases during the 1970’s.

Susan had a brilliant mind and a passion for helping others so, after the family moved to Douglas Wyoming in 1977, she became instrumental in helping to create the Coalition Against Family Violence, a family crisis center through which she and others assisted victims (sometimes in dangerous and risky circumstances) and also trained other advocates to do the same. She and her husband would later travel and live in a number of places throughout the US and she always made it a point to learn as much as possible about each community, to make friends, seek to volunteer, to help out, and otherwise get involved to the benefit of many.

She loved taking a drive and having a picnic in the mountains or other scenic areas and sharing these excursions with family and friends.

Susan and Tom enjoyed spending many a weekend endeavoring to complete some type of creative project like refinishing and upholstering furniture, painting, sewing or redecorating…the “Honey Do” list in their household was nearly endless but their home was a work of art!

Those two had an abundance of opportunities to explore and appreciate many other cultures and spiritual philosophies, however, they both remained steadfast to their Christian faith and the teachings of Jesus Christ. They were members of the Unity Church and consistently maintained a firm practice of prayer and belief in the Love and Light of God.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, her son Barry and Tom, her husband of 64 years.

She is survived by her daughter, her 5 grandchildren (all of whom she took great pride in)– Kyrrah Daniels (Bates), Cierra Daniels, Sean Carter, Maggie Carter and Carly Carter (Romero) as well as her brother Gary Young (Donna) and her sister Candace Young-Richey (Don), her sister-in-law Vicci Carter, 4 nieces, 3 nephews and other beloved cousins and family members.

Services for Susan will be held on Friday, October 9, 2026 at 11 o’clock in the morning where she will be laid to rest beside Tom at Cheyenne National Cemetery.

A reception for her celebration of life will follow at The Buckle Club, situated on the top floor of the Exhibition Hall, 1230 W. 8th Avenue, Frontier Park, Cheyenne WY 82009.
