Timothy L. Gallagher
April 29, 1946 — March 25, 2026
Timothy L. Gallagher, born on April 29, 1946, passed away in his home in Portland, Oregon on March 25, 2026. Tim was born and raised in Ontario, Oregon to Martin P. “Buck” Gallagher and Dorothy Bush Gallagher. He was the third oldest of eight siblings. After high school Tim enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served on the USS Truxtun, a nuclear-powered cruiser, and recruited sailors to join the Navy from several recruiting offices in Oregon. After nine years in the Navy, Tim attended and graduated from Reed College in Portland.
Tim was influential in local government, serving as chief of staff for Portland’s mayor Frank Ivancie, then again for Bud Clark who defeated Ivancie for the mayorship. He finished his career as a fundraiser for the United Way. While working at the City of Portland, Tim worked closely with the group who turned the Vietnam Veterans dream of a memorial into the current Oregon Vietnam Veterans Living Memorial in Washington Park. Supporting veterans continued as a cause close to his heart throughout his life.
After retirement, Tim devoted himself to his wife Janet, his two daughters and their families, his backyard vegetable garden and cooking the fruit of that garden. He also maintained close ties with many friends in Ontario and eastern Oregon and enjoyed traveling to eastern Oregon to hunt, fish, and enjoy the spectacular beauty.
Tim was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Lynne and is survived by his wife Janet (Van Patten, who was also born and raised in Ontario), his daughter Patti Harrison her husband Shane and daughter Paige, and his daughter Katie Gallagher, her husband Nick McWhorter and children Oliver and Brenna. He is also survived by his brothers Rowland Brown, Pat Gallagher, James Broughton, Leslie Turner and Mike Turner as well as his sister Nancy Gallagher. There will be a family and friends gathering for a Celebration of Life in the future.
