Anita Engel Malon
May 16, 1936 — Oct 14, 2025
Malon, Anita Engel Born May 16, 1936 in Sherburn, MN passed away October 14, 2025 in St. Paul, MN. Anita is preceded in death by parents, Percy and Esther Engel; sister, Betty Worthley; husband, Edward Malon. Survived by daughter, Stephanie (James) Malon-Rufi; grandson, Roman James; granddaughter, Clara Esther; step-granddaughters, Alexis and Katelyn (Jaden); sister, Patricia (Jerry) Huse; sister-in-law, Carol Malon; and many nieces and nephews and their families.
Anita initially attended Hamline University and then University of Minnesota, where she earned a degree in Business Administration. Her professional career began as an administrative assistant to the president of Macalester College, a role she held for five years. With her sights set on New York City, she accepted a position with the Minnesota Pavilion at the 1964 World’s Fair and soon decided to make New York her permanent home. She later joined New York University as an administrative assistant to the dean of the law school.
For many years, Anita served as Executive Assistant to Mrs. Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, a role that offered extraordinary opportunities, including frequent travel to Paris. Her exceptional professionalism earned her membership in the Seraphic Society, an exclusive organization of executive assistants supporting CEOs and other prominent leaders, where she was a beloved and active member for 49 years and served as President from 2004-2006.
In addition to dedicating herself to her profession, Anita was a devoted wife to Edward Malon, whom she married in 1973, and a loving mother to their daughter, Stephanie. Not long before Stephanie’s arrival, Anita and Ed purchased their country home in Rhinebeck, New York, which became a beloved retreat and gathering place for family and friends over many decades. After Ed’s passing, she balanced life between Rhinebeck and her apartment in the city while continuing her work as Executive Assistant to musical theatre composer and philanthropist Mr. Ted Shen until she retired in 2024 and moved to St. Paul. Closer to family in her final days, she was happiest visiting with friends, family and loved ones, especially her cherished grandchildren. Her sense of style, quick wit, and generous spirit will be deeply missed.
