Betty Jean Varn Hayes

Betty Jean Varn Hayes, 93, of Lexington, went to be with her Heavenly Father on September 25, 2026.

She was born to Ruby Burgess Hornsby and William Duncan Hornsby in Batesburg, South Carolina on December 15, 1932. She always loved the Lord, and even at a young age, enjoyed going to church and Sunday school. She was a loyal member of Lexington Baptist Church for over 20 years, and was active with the senior group, with one of her favorite things being singing praises to her Lord with the senior choir.

On August 27, 1946, she married the love of her life, Hansel C. Varn Sr. They enjoyed many years together serving in the church and helping build East Columbia Baptist Church, where her husband served as a Deacon. She enjoyed spending time with her family and working in her yard.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Cheryl L. Hackney (John); brother, Billy Hornsby; grandchildren, Chad Varn (Cary), Jamie Varn (Lona), Tesha Newton (Barry); Toni Harrison (Thomas), Brian Varn (Angie), Casey Varn (Sabrina), Jessica Thomas (JT), John Hackey Jr. (Patti), Billie Jo Sandlin (Dwayne), and Kit Hackney (Krystal); stepchildren Elaine Hite (Edgar), Greg Hayes (Mary Lee), and Janet Smith (Dave); and many grand and great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years; her second husband, Edwin T. Hayes; four children, Baby Girl Varn, Hansel C. Varn Jr, Wesley O’Neil Varn, and Ricky G. Varn; and sisters, Judy, Nell, and Francis.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 30 at 2pm at Lexington Baptist Church in the chapel with a visitation one hour prior.
