George Northrup Smith, Jr.

May 28, 1944 — May 31, 2026

George Northrup Smith, Jr., of Chapin, South Carolina, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026 after a long illness, surrounded by love and the devoted care he received throughout his final years. Born in Summerville, South Carolina, he built a distinguished and respected career, serving as Nuclear Director at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, where his leadership, expertise, and steady presence earned the admiration of colleagues and friends.

He married Carol, the love of his life, and together they shared a lifetime of memories, adventures, and unwavering partnership. Even as Alzheimer’s slowly changed the shape of their days, the devotion between them never faded. Carol remained steadfast in ensuring he was cared for with dignity, comfort, and gentleness.

Outside of his work, George found joy in the simple, grounding pleasures of life. He loved to fish, play golf, and travel in his motorhome — adventures that brought him peace, laughter, and cherished memories with the people he loved.

He is survived by his son, Johnny Smith, and Johnny’s wife, Allison. He was a proud grandfather to Andrea Cook and her husband Robbie, Josh Smith and his wife Hannah, and Justin Smith. His legacy continues through his beloved great‑grandchildren — Brielle, Annaleise, and Isaac Smith — each of whom brought him joy and light.

He will be remembered for his strength, his dedication to his work and the deep love he held for his family.

A service to honor his life will be held in mid‑July, with the exact date to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to organizations supporting Alzheimer’s research or caregiver support.
