Maureen Marske
Nov 5, 1938 — Oct 1, 2026
Maureen (Mooney Marske) was never one to sit quietly on the sidelines of life. With a spirited personality, a generous heart, and an opinion on just about everything, she lived her 87 years with faith, humor, conviction, and an enduring love for family. Maureen passed away peacefully on October 1, 2026, in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Born November 5, 1938, in Dublin, Ireland, Maureen was the fourth of six children. Fascinated by all things American from her teenage years, she dreamed of making a life in the United States. At just 21, with characteristic courage and determination, she secured employment and crossed the Atlantic to begin a new life in California.
It was at an Orange County Dixieland jazz club that she met James “Jim” Marske. Convinced these two good-looking young people should get to know each other, a stranger bought them a pitcher of beer to share. The rest, as they say, is history. They married on February 23, 1963. Jim, an engineer and pilot, was reserved, while Maureen was social and rarely without an opinion, which she delivered with that unmistakable Irish accent. They shared a sense of adventure, a wonderful sense of humor, and a deep love for one another. They spent 25 years in Michigan City, Indiana, followed by 25 years in Marion, Ohio, before retiring in Arizona near family.
Together they raised four children, Sean Marske, Kimberly (Marske) Hauskins, Laura (Marske) Blinn, Kathleen Marske.
Maureen embraced motherhood wholeheartedly, attending school activities, sporting events, and making holidays special with traditions, food, and music. Her mothering extended well beyond her own children. She was the neighborhood mother, the mom you ran to in an emergency, and the mom you avoided when you knew you had some explaining to do. She adored babies, loved animals, and had an instinct for caring for anyone needing a little extra attention.
Service was not simply something Maureen did. It was one of the defining characteristics of her life. She dedicated countless hours to church and community. She visited nursing home residents and was a celebrated hospice volunteer. She sponsored new members entering the Catholic Church, counseled couples preparing for marriage, and was mentor to teenagers before they received the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Maureen was endlessly curious and remarkably knowledgeable. She could strike up a conversation with anyone, from international politics to celebrity gossip. She was intelligent, gracious, entertaining, and wonderfully outspoken. Whether you agreed with her or not, you always knew where Maureen stood.
In 1995, Maureen fulfilled another lifelong dream when she proudly became an American citizen. Though she embraced her adopted country wholeheartedly, she remained distinctly Irish, deeply Catholic, and immensely proud to be an American.
After 61 years of marriage, Jim passed away in June 2024. His absence was profound for Maureen. They had spent so many years side by side that imagining one without the other was difficult. She spoke of him often and missed him deeply.
Maureen is survived by her four children,10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and her siblings Christina Galvin and Breda Oglesby of Ireland, and Tommy Mooney of Australia. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim, her parents, Mary and George Mooney, and her siblings Kathleen Whelan and George Mooney.
Maureen lived a life of conviction, faith, service, and love. For those fortunate enough to have known her, there will always be a story to tell about Maureen. She would almost certainly have an opinion about how we told them.
Her family will remember most the woman who loved them unconditionally, showed up when it mattered, laughed often, and gave so much of herself to others.
