Summers Funeral Home

Summers Funeral Home is a funeral home with an on-site crematory in Meridian, Idaho, serving the Treasure Valley community. Services include burial services, cremation services, funeral and memorial services, pre-need planning, reception and catered events, ritual washing, incense burning, memorial diamonds and human composting (offered through partner providers), veterans services including military honors, and ash scattering assistance.

The location includes a chapel and reception and event space, along with dedicated areas for identification and private viewings. Witness cremation is available, and Spanish-speaking staff are available to assist families.

Summers Funeral Home does not operate an on-site cemetery and does not provide pet cremation.

This location, in Northeast Meridian, was built in 2001 as the Summers Funeral Homes Ustick Chapel, with an on-site crematorium. It is part of a Summers Funeral Home lineage dating to 1911, when Clyde E. Summers partnered with P.L. Fry to launch a mortuary business in Boise, Idaho, known as Fry & Summers. In 1913, P.L. Fry sold his interest to Harry Krebs, and the firm was renamed Summers & Krebs. In 1927, Krebs sold his stake back to Clyde Summers, who took full control, renamed the business Summers Funeral Home, and remodeled the mortuary, dedicating two rooms to his parents, William and Adeline.

In 1939, the firm built a new corporate facility at 1205 W. Bannock St. in downtown Boise, which stood as a landmark for more than 80 years. In 1948, A. Dale McMurtrey, a Mountain Home High School graduate and World War II veteran, began an apprenticeship with the firm; after completing mortuary school in 1950, he returned as general manager. In 1956, McMurtrey and his wife, Shirley, purchased the entire Summers Funeral Home operation; under their ownership, the company expanded outside Boise and operated a regional medical ambulance service from the facility.

In 1980, the McMurtreys opened a location in a former Nazarene Church building in Eagle, Idaho, as the Summers Funeral Homes Eagle Chapel, which has since closed. In 1988, after 32 years of ownership, the McMurtreys sold the business to three longtime employees, with David B. Yraguen and James B. Maguire as principal operating partners. In 1991, under Yraguen and Maguire, the company built a dedicated facility in Mountain Home, Idaho, named Summers Funeral Homes – McMurtrey Chapel in honor of the McMurtreys; that location later became Rost Funeral Home. In 1995, the original downtown Boise facility underwent a multi-million-dollar remodel into a 16,000-square-foot flagship known as the Boise Chapel. In 2020, the downtown Boise facility was permanently closed after 81 years of continuous service, and the building was sold to Idaho Power. The Meridian location is now the only remaining open Summers Funeral Home.
